I have found good deals on the Look PX 12, Salomon STH2 & the Z12. Can anyone make any recommendations?
I am 5'9", 210 lbs, 50 years old, advanced, type II skier. I generally ski with 6-8 DIN.
I can vouch for the PX series binding having 6 pair myself ranging from PX 12 to 14. They are simple, sturdy and have a very large range of elastic travel before the release. If stuck in deep powder you can pull up on the heel piece to reenter the binding.
Some folks don't like them because you have to really press the heel piece hard to get out of them. I wouldn't want to use cheap carbon poles to release them as you might break the pole.
Z12's tend to break. If ease of clicking in is important (it is for me in deep snow) the STH is easier to click into than some. (Havent used the looks but some reviews say harder to click in and out. ) The STH also comes with the driver toe, which has more elasticity than the Z12 toe--which means less chance of pre release if you're skiing hard. And the toe height and wing width is adjustable, which might make a difference if your boots are worn. I would definitely pick the STH over the Z12, can't comment on the Looks.
Minor point, but, I'm not a fan of how heel of the Look PX needs to be pushed on to get out of the binding. Philpug put me on a pair of Solly Sth12's on my new skis and they are much easier to release the heel when the day is done.
