New member here and as my 2nd post I would like to seek some advice and give a brief background....I know this gets debated quite often, however it tends to be more "application specific" so I will try to provide as much info as possible.
I have been skiing for about 30 years, have been away from it for about 6-7 years and been spending time with the kids. I started back in 83 in Europe and used rentals in the beginning, after a year I was gifted a brand new pair of 180 cm Atomic ARC's in which I tore the tip off the first year.
Then came the K2 5500's in which I literally skied into the ground, these were 204's and pretty much did everything I could throw at them except keep a hard fast tight turn but did fairly well.
I used the 5500's until about 1997-98 and picked up my current dynamic duo.....
K2 R12 in 207 cm length and fitted with Tyrolia Power Select D8
K2 MSL in 207 cm length and fitted with Tyrolia Power Select Race
I truly love both these skis and will likely never give them up. That being said...I'm likely not going to enter in a GS event but I do like to hit the trails fast and the R12's just eat them up. I know they require a little more effort but are very predictable, but at 207 cm they are not the best for bumps, neither are the MSL's but both skis love to go fast and are very stable at speeds.
I did try some shape skis about 7 years ago and I found that when going straight they were slightly twitchy and unstable, not in a big way but could be just that these were a different animal and I wasn't used to them. I'm sure technology has changed for the better so I honestly don't know where to look in order to keep the high speed stability and confidence of the R12's and the all-mountain capability of the MSL in a good all-around shape ski.
I'm loyal to K2 but can be leaned on to other manufacturers. I don't see many threads on the R12 and this particular ski has a corresponding 12MM sidecut which works very well. Has anyone used this ski extensively that has gone to a shape ski with superior results? I'm not after a dedicated mogul ski, but seems most shape skis of shorter length now work good in the moguls...I could be wrong. I should have bought the MSL's in a 185 but that's water under the bridge, they work in bumps but I just have to be careful.
All input and criticism is appreciated.
