Maria von Trapp has passed

Thread Starter

The last remaining member of the von Trapp family has passed away at the age of 99 in Stowe Vermont.  After fleeing Hitler and Austria during WWII, the von Trapp's established a wonderful lodge at the base of Stowe.  They were immortalized in the classic "Sound of Music".

I first stayed there in 1965 and in later years with my children.  Then, it was quite the thing to go "all the way to the top" of the formidable Stowe, more famous for it's challenging National and Starr runs but gave the kids that sense of accomplishment on the long and meandering Toll Road that serviced the Trapp Family Lodge.

So many memories and smiles, words can't express.

As I type this I am looking at the Alps. Albeit the Italian Alps but still. When I first saw them the song The Hills are Alive started playing in my head and they most certainly are alive. I feel like this visit has given me even more appreciation for the heartbreak the family felt as they were forced to flee and knowing the destruction that would surely come. May she rest in peace.

I was just in the Von Trapp family lodge less than a month ago, hoping to spot her. I was my first time there after skiing in Vermont for many years. We were not lucky.

Wonderful contributions to the sport and leisure activity of skiing.  Amazing background story immortalized on the silver screen and a Christmas tradition for most to recount. on TV.

They don't make em like they used to. RIP.
