Next trip to Colorado this weekend, 2/21-2/24

Hey guys,

Well I'm leaving tomorrow with the girlfriend for my next trip to Summit county...sorry you guys have another midwesterner coming in to ski away your powder party lol.

We planned it this time so we get in Friday night and we're skiing Saturday, Sunday, Monday, flying back Tuesday morning...hoping to beat some of the crowds by skiing Sunday and Monday.

My last trip right before Christmas landed me in the emergency room with an AC sprain (shoulder) on the first day of our trip (at Vail...they got like 8-9" that day.) It was pretty dumb how it happened..I did a 360 off a water break...went to fast, leaned to far forward, landed on shoulder, and off to Vail Valley Med Center I go. The plan is to not end up in the emergency room this trip!

Point of that story is that it was my gf's first time in powder and it took some time for her to learn and gain confidence (as expected). Frustrating for her because it was totally new and uncomfortable, and frustrating for me because I was missing out on the back bowls...then even worse when I ended up in the ER!

Anyway, all I've heard is that Colorado has been getting pounded with snow, so it looks like more learning in the powder for her. Here's our tentative plan:

This Saturday, A-Basin (to avoid some crowds)

Sunday: Vail

Monday: Breckenridge

She may let me go off on my own to ski the blacks for a couple runs each day, which will be nice. I've been to these 3 resorts in the past, but any recommendations for the trip? Know of any good beginner areas that are close to blacks?

Thanks!

For a 3-day trip, that's a pretty good itinerary.  Thanks for coming; we appreciate your $$$.

Thanks, I always wondered how the locals feel about the vacationers. I suppose it is just a fact of life, esp at the larger resorts because it is such a large destination spot. I at least try to support the local businesses/restaurants when I visit...hospitals included!

Since it's forecast to snow on Sat then clear up, maybe save A-basin for sunny Sunday.  You'll have much more fun there on a clear day when you can see what you are skiing.

Guessing you have an epic pass, I won't suggest Copper, so how about:

Sat: Keystone

Sun: A-basin

Mon: Vail

Maybe an epic passer will chime in, but I'd guess Keystone will be much less crowded than Vail or Breck on Sat.

Edit: and I also appreciate vacationers.  Without you all there is no way the areas could afford all the lifts and terrain we get to enjoy without getting on an airplane!

I'm a doc, and I give you official locals' permission to skip the hospital this visit!

Cool, thanks for the info. You are correct, I have an Epic pass. Very good point about A-basin..it was snowing when I was there in November and the flat light was terrible. I was planning on Breck for Monday because we are staying in Denver on Monday night, and its a bit closer than Vail. Plus, I'm most familiar with Breck and I think its a pretty good spot. I still haven't been to Keystone, so perhaps that is worth checking out on Saturday.

Welcome back. I hope you are driving up Friday night. With the 5" yesterday and what is forecast through Saturday, there will be big traffic Saturday morning. I ski Breck and reports by friends is that Keystone has been much less crowded than Breck on powder days. Probably because this year Breck has gotten the most snow of the VR areas in almost every storm.

I think you have a good plan for your visit.

Have fun.

Also... consider Beaver Creek for the weekend since it's also less crowded.  It would be a bummer to drive over from Frisco two days, though.  Maybe stay in Avon instead if you can change it?

We're renting a condo in Dillon, so it would be tough to change it. Perhaps we'll do Beaver instead of Vail though, it doesn't look too much farther.

Yep, planning on driving up Friday night. I only booked a standard FWD rental car...might need to consider biting the bullet and getting an SUV.

PS - it looks like East Wall isn't open yet. Still too early in the season, even with all the snow?

Too much snow, actually. Pretty much all of it has slid. (not to the ground, it's just a bit of a mess.)

That said, they are very close... I think they just need it to stop snowing a little bit. If not this weekend, next week it should open for sure.

Al's last update on the East Wall is here:

They bombed it to smithereens.  I haven't been up, but it looked very, very black from blasting on the webcam.

Keep an eye on Al's blog.  Hopefully this storm will be big enough to cover the mess.  They probably won't open it without decent visibility, so your timing might be perfect.

Too much snow...impossible! lol jk, but that is pretty crazy. Perhaps they will open on Monday...which would alter my plans a bit. Otherwise I may need to plan a late season trip as well.

Too much snow?  Ha, perfect opportunity to plug my post about what too much snow did to Tucker Mountain at Copper :)

I didn't save any of the webcam pics of the East Wall, but it looked like the same miserable to ski mess you see on Tucker here:
