Whistler-Blackcomb mid-March for kids

Thread Starter

I'm planning a trip to WB for mid-March.  Originally, I was planning to go myself and do "the Camp" for the week, but it looks like my wife might be able to swing a week off work at that time, in which case we might bring the kids.

What can we expect for conditions for the third week of March, particularly for the kids? They are 9 and 12 yrs old, been in lessons since 4 yrs old and 7 yrs old, respectively. They are strong skiers for their ages, but with limited exposure to western/ungroomed conditions.  We were there two years ago, and they skied a lot of mid-mountain Blackcomb (particularly the Solar Coaster area) and loved it. Should we expect spring conditions at that altitude?

Thanks for any advice.

I always end up going the weekend closest to my birthday (March 19th) and I typically have very good conditions--not spring like at all (still cold and snowy). As you've no doubt heard this year is anything but typical so I can't make any promises. There are plenty of groomers, not just mid mountain at Blackcomb, but everywhere--even in the high alpine, and plenty that get less traffic than the Solar Coaster area.

I've only been once, in mid-March and conditions were wintry, with several days of light to moderate snow. I've been told there are times when it is raining low and closed high but I believe that can happen any month.

I would expect anything from full-on winter to rain. March is a high snow month for Whistler-Blackcomb. There can also be upwards of a 10 degree celsius between the base and peak. so even if it's raining low, it often be snowing high. I would pack snow clothes suitable for 0 to -20 celsius.

Also, make sure to head to the Symphony area for some easy "glades" and easy intro off-piste.

After this week no worries about the snow base. Late start this year but 5 feet of fresh this week and

more coming. March should be great skiing on all 5200 vertical. Usually temps are a fairly comfortable -10c morning in the Alpine to above freezing in the valley.later in the day.
