What size Back Country XC skis to buy

Hi.

I'm fairly new to cross country skiing and will be buying my first pair of BC X skis tomorrow (Alpina Trackers).  My weight of 120 pounds is right at the cusp of two sizes - 165 and 175 mm.  I've rented the 175's already and had a blast, but I wonder if maybe the 165's would be easier to manage.  I'm only 5'2" tall and thought maybe a shorter ski would be easier for me to lift the back end of during my glide.

I'm using these primarily to ski on my somewhat flat property in Colorado (in various conditions), but as I get better would like to go other places (but nothing too crazy, I'm not a thrill seeker - hah!)

Any advice is welcome.  Thanks!

Generally, the 165 will offer you less glide and more grip. Go 175 and if you need more grip on a particular day wear a 10lb pack or look for snow with more grip or find a gentler angle or give a little more oomph in your kick or harringbone or a few other tricks as you travel. There are a lot of tradeoffs in waxless XC that are mitigated with technique and attitude. Go 175 since you liked them.

Okay, will do.  Thanks for the tips!

I agree. 175 will give you better glide. If you're not getting enough grip with it once you get to hillier terrain, the solution is to eat more ice cream. More glide + more ice cream = win.

Hah!  I'll pass on the ice cream, but I do like the concept of more glide.  Now I just need some more snow!

I didn't need skins when I lived in CNY as the only terrain steep enough was a gully with maybe 60 vertical feet. Now that I'm in the Cascades I carry skins as steep enough to need them could be a mile long. I got some  70mm wide skins at Gearx.com at a good price.
