Jackson Hole -- car needed, or shuttle fine?

Giving some thought to an early April Jackson Hole trip.  Is a rental car needed or is there readily-available shuttle/bus service making a car unnecessary?

Shuttle, cab, and bus work fine. I have had good luck With "Cowboy Cab".

I've never had a car there and it has always worked out just fine.

Are there shuttles or bus service to Grand Targhee if we wanted to check it out for a day?

Here you go: Grand Targhee Express. 99 bucks gets you round trip + a lift ticket. Been a few years, but when a bunch of us did it, it worked out great.

Thanks.

If you're staying in Teton Village I would recommend getting a car. The shuttle from the airport to Teton Village for a couple people is almost the cost of a rental car and getting to/from a grocery store on the bus is a pain in the ass.

If you get a cab from the airport it's the same price as the shuttle and they will make a brief stop at the grocery store if you ask.

Talked to an older couple who spend a week every year at JH staying in Teton Village.  They don't bother with a car.  One of the reasons they like JH.  I gather they take the bus into town for dinner every so often.

Early April may be a month or two late for best skiing at Jackson Hole. While you can get late storms, a lot of the mountain faces E and SE and may not have good snow later in the year.

Hmm -- you make a good point.   Kids have Spring Break, is the problem.  About three years ago for a late season trip I was picking between Telluride and and JH (never been to either) -- Telluride is north-facing and has a reliable reputation for having late season conditions.  Turned out fine, but wouldn't you know, JH got pounded that week.

Thanks, everyone. I've been wondering about the same question.

We skied at JH the last two Spring breaks and rented an SUV both times.  While you don't absolutely need a car, it is convenient to have one for runs to the supermarket, restaurants, etc.  On the other hand, on some days, the car never left the pull-in space in front of the condo.  So, the question is, how much do you want to pay for the convenience for some days?  My memory is hazy, but I think we paid between $400- $500 for the week.
