quick question: can I check skis not in a bag?

I am packing for my trip to New Mexico & Colorado (Wolf Creek) with the family, and realized that we are missing one of our ski bags. Can I show up at the airline check-in (Southwest) with a pair of skis not in a bag, or do I need to rush out to buy something? I used to see the airlines put skis in plastic bags, but that may have been a long time ago. I have 2 bags for 5 pairs of skis right now, so I can double-up to fit 4 pairs but one pair won't fit.

Wouldn't you be afraid they'd be damaged with no bag??? I'm still afraid of damage IN a padded bag and I pad the bag with clothes and other things to help keep them safe. So I'd go get another bag or just demo when I get there.

I know in Europe, you can get them wrapped in a plastic bag @ the airport. Not so sure about USA. Best to have some kind of cover for them.

Buy bubblepack and wrap them in that, with duct tape.

These are my youngest boy's skis (season rental). Airline (once I got through on the phone) said they would provide bag and make me sign a waiver.

I traveled with skis in a plastic bag provided at the airport once and they came through just fine.  Used to be a lot more common years ago.
