Gathering Weather: Just got back from the Mammoth Demo..this is what we found out about the conditions...

Even with the minimal snow falls, Mammoth is skiing in true Mammoth form with great windpack. The chutes and steeps on top half if the mountain were fantastic the past two days, trails like Daves Run, Wipeout Chutes and Paranoia were oh so much fun and in mid season form. For those on the fence, because of the concern about conditions and how it is skiing, at this point I can dispel the mammoth end.

The Tahoe leg, is still TBA. We have been seen promise of storms but none have really come to fruition. Again, ONE storm could solve all of our problems but we still haven't gotten it yet. Will we? We are hoping, but hope is not a strategy. We will keep you posted.

Ah the wind buff, helps make up for the fact that it's windy!!

Not sure any of you follow this guy, but he posts videos and pics regularly: http://mammothsnowman.com/

He's also on FB.

Definitely coming to the Gathering. Still undecided about following the itinerary or longer at Mammoth. Phil's demo and cost savings make me lean towards Th F at Tahoe.

Wonder if we could go all the way to mammoth after I arrive Saturday and ski there Sunday. Anyone have real world advice on driving from SF Bay Area (kid lives in Berkeley)?

Yeah, head to Reno and go south

If you get into SFO on Saturday in the AM, you should be able to make it to Mammoth Saturday night

This is around a 6-7 hr haul in good conditions, add snow and it WILL take longer

It may be prudent to Ski Sunday in North Tahoe, staying Saturday Night somewhere close to Tahoe.

This technique will work best for the north shore resorts.

Then you have a 3 hour spin to mammoth after skiing

Nah, I get in early evening. Original plan was to get up early Sunday and ski most of the day in Tahoe.

Reality is coming back. . All the way to mammoth would be midnight at best, probably 2 or 3 am. Compromise of driving to Tahoe Saturday night might be worth while though.

You're still planning to go, aren't you?

I would make the run to Tahoe Saturday in that case, stay in Truckee/Tahoe City

Hit up one of the North shore resorts, then bail for Mammy around 3:00

And yeah Now that we got snow, its game on in the sierras

so I plan to be there

My only regret from the two days we skied at Mammoth was that I didn't get any pictures to show it off.  The place is skiing really well.  Wish we could have stayed another day to explore a bit more after ski testing.

We bumped into another bear there too @pud Hope he pops in to keep us up to date on conditions.

Does this mean the demo at Mammoth is back on?   Joani Lynch at Mammoth e-mailed me that you were going down there in person to try to set it up.

Demo will be at Alpine

It was great to meet Trekchick and Philpug at Mammoth last Thursday. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the conditions to improve for the gathering. The mountain was skiing great for the amount of snow they had. By the way I loved the new Blizzard X-Power 810 as a frontside carver and decent bump ski.

It was great meeting you too.  I look forward to making some turns with you next month.

I'm stoked to see the weather changing for this gathering.

Mammoth shared this photo today.

Squaw Valley is celebrating 8 feet of snow in the past few weeks with an offer on lodging.
