What would persuade you to attend the 2004 EpicSki Academy?

If you were not at the 2003 EpicSki Academy and have not yet planned to go to the 2004 EpicSki Academy, what would persaude you to attend?

Plenty of advanced notice and preferably a week that schools are on Vacation here in the east as I am a teacher and can not take the days off. A long weekend would be preferable to mid-week. I might be able to use my personal days together to stretch it out.

My second option would probably be do-able. That was to have it on a long weekend format (could be in the "less-busy" period) so that I could attatch 2 personal days to it.

I realize that school vacation periods are not always the best time to go, but unfortunately, that is the only time I can make it unless the second suggestion was the way it worked out.

I've been reading a lot of threads about this subject lately.

Is the committee having a difficult time picking a venue and dates to hold it, trying to fit in everyone this time around? I thought last year was perfect in just about every way. Great time, great place, great lodging and rates....why reinvent the wheel? It seemed to please quite a few people last year from what I've read, and I'd do that again, same place, in a heartbeat.

Pick a place, pick a date, and let the chips fall where they may. Let's worry about the people who Want to Go, and not the ones who don't.

There has been alot of talk of the Academy lately. I am beginning to wonder if the Academy has replaced the Gathering.

For those who are reading and don't know the Gathering is a meeting of fellow Bears that just want to rip, bash, bust, mash, slash, plow, dig, or just ski with some of the other Bears who post in the forums. So what are we to do with the Gathering? There are many people interested and helping to plan the next Academy but no one in interested in the "main" Gathering.

So a couple of questions for my fellow Bears out there:

1. Who wants to help plan the next Gathering?

2. Should the Gathering be at a time and place different than the Academy?

3. Should the Academy replace the Gathering?

4. Should the Academy have a standing place, date and time the same for every year?

I guess The Academy is a Gathering with An Agenda.
I think holding a number of Gatherings in various spots is more do-able given the loose nature of them, and then you can choose to hold one concurrent with The Academy also.
Academy should find a regular date, people can plan around it then. As for a permanent venue...I can't see much benefit in locking it down.

I certainly hope that both the Academy and the gathering have long and happy lives. They're different, and they're both fun, so why on earth would either one "replace" the other? Since I and several others like to attend both, my vote goes for having them at the same place, one right after the other. It would be more difficult and expensive for me to attend both if they were at different places - I mean, REALLY different places - but I'd still like to attend both if I could. At the same time, I think that each one would still be fun even if they were separated by time and distance.

Maybe the reason there has been so much more talk about the Academy is that it has more things that require, rather than just desire, firm planning. For example, we can always show up at any resort on a day it's operating and meet to ski at a gathering. Not so with the Academy - we must make arrangements with the ski area in advance, and not all areas may be agreeable to that.

Once the location of the Academy is known, it will be easier to make decisions about the gathering - do people want it at that place, or somewhere else? If somewhere else, do they want it close by, or at a fun location that happens to be not near the location of the Academy? I hope I would not have to choose between either one or the other. If I were forced to make a choice, for me, it would be the Academy - but for some others, I'm sure, it would be the gathering.

It'll all work out, and it'll all be fun. There are a lot of Bears to go around!

For 2003, the Academy was planned for Utah, because we had already chosen Alta/Snowbird for the Gathering. This year, the only discussion of a Gathering veneus has been for one in Canada.

In an IDEAL WORLD, the gathering and academy would end up in the same place.

But I can forsee some problems, regarding that. Some of the people who attend the gathering are not, and never will be, interested in taking lessons. Since they are not interested in lesssons, the idea of having it during a holiday week may be more viable.

The way things are going, we may end up with a few regional gatherings, as oppossed to one big one. Sometimes they will correspond with the time and location of the academy, sometimes not.
So be it

Location .
Would need to reasonable to travel to and not require too much travel time from my home. Would also need to be at a location that offers conditions and terrain worth visiting over my regular haunts.

AND

Timing .
Would have to fit within my schedule.

The week of 2003 Epic Ski Academy (starting Jan 27, 2003) happened to coincide the first week of the Spring semester for many colleges (mine included). The first half of January would have been great for those who have to adhere to college schedule. Having said that, I have no idea how many bears are associated with school system. It makes little sense to make a big effort to accomodate just a tiny group of people. So, if you have problems like mine, speak up.

Winning the lottery (any lottery) would do for me.

To persuade me, I need as much advance notice as possible. Only way I can afford next year is frequent flyer miles and time share. Both require booking in advance - got the miles and weeks banked, just need the date and place.

Oh, and I also need someone else willing to travel with me, prefer not to travel alone when going that far ......

LESS SECRECY AND INSULARITY from the "planning committee"

like all "committees" this one suffers from the Al Haig syndrome.

MORE secrecy and insularity. in fact, if you can squeeze a little conspiracy and malevolent intent in there, i'd feel a lot better.

This was a really big issue last year. I remember, Scotski, and others were getting a bit frustrated by the inability to make plans in advance. Then we never heard from them again.

Also, if our Euro pals are trying to arrange a group rate on the airlines, that would also require advanced notice.
