Things to try:
Khinkali - Georgian dumplings. Be careful - usually served hot and have broth inside. Eat using hands only (big no-no using fork and knife). Proper technique: bite-sip the broth-bite, don't put down until done, don't eat the thing on top, use it as handle.
Khachapuri - Georgian variety of cheese bread. There are several types, IMHO best two are imeruly (looks like naan bread, has cheese inside) and acharuli (looks like a boat), filled with cheese and egg done medium over easy on top. To die for.
Lobiani - looks like imeruli, beans filling instead of cheese
If no nut allergies try following:
Satzivi - chicken under walnut curry
Badridjani - eggplants with wallnut paste filling
Pkhali - green beans with ever present walnuts and local spices
Wines - hit or miss, Georgian reds are on the sweeter side with very distinct taste. Whites are on the same scale. Kindzmarauli, Saperavi, Rkaziteli would be the most popular ones.
Beer - nada. Deschutes or 10 Barrels (wink-wink)
If you have someone who is local - ask him about it, they should know the best places around.
thank you very much for your updates. Great to see an insiders view of the Olympics. I volunteered at the 2010 games in Vancouver at the Freestyle venue at Cypress and had the time of my life. Sounds like you're getting a trip of a lifetime over there.
I wouldn't want to be one of the Norwegen ski tech's right now. Sounds like the entire country wants to string them up. The announcer on NBC kept saying it wasn't the wax, it was the base structure they kept getting wrong.
