Partial Inserts Dangerous?

Thread Starter

I had my bindings installed with inserts for ease of movement between my skis, but on one of my skis I feel that they were mounted quite far back.

I want to try them out mounted quite a bit further forward, and I'm lucky that the hole pattern of my bindings means I could just "move up a peg" and only have to drill two more holes forward of the existing holes and use the existing inserts - rather than drilling a bunch of brand new holes and making the ski look look swiss cheese.

Problem is, I'm on holidays currently and none of the stores here have any quiver killers or other inserts. They would have to mount the two new holes the classic method. Would it be fine having a bunch of inserts for the majority of the binding, but the front two binding holes mounted normally? Or would this be unsafe for some reason?

I would then get them redrilled with inserts when I get home. That way I can always just shift the binding back again if I'm unhappy with the forward position.

Yes, that should be fine.  As long as everything is snug and aligned correctly I can't see how this would be a problem.  It's just another way of attaching the binding to the ski.  Make sure you still seal the new holes with glue to prevent water from getting in there.  I would definitely put the inserts in though when you get home.

What type of 'inserts' are being used? If they aren't sealed and/or filled with a screw, the may permit moisture into the core of the ski which could lead to delamination.

Ya, I'd still squirt some glue or calk in the fresh holes to keep them somewhat water tight before skiing them, even for just a couple days.
