Vote on Who Carries the American Flag at Sochi

Thread Starter

There is a vote up for who gets to carry the flag at the Sochi Olympics

I voted Lindsey Van, mostly because I'm impressed with all she went through to get Women's Ski Jumping into the Olympics.

Van makes a lot of sense among those choices.  Although I think of we're going to make political and human rights statements Johnny Weir should also be in the running :-)  It isn't supposed to be political but it always in anyway so why not?

Didn't the participating athletes used to vote for this? I think that's a better idea.

It looks more like an opinion poll, not an official vote.

I vote Bode. Because he's Bode.

It should go to someone who personifies the spirit of the USA, someone who has been there before and is at the autumn or winter of their career, and someone who has shown excellence by achieving a gold medal (yeah, I know it is just another race/competition but this is the Olympic forum).  This leaves Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Billy Demong, and Julia Mancuso, Shawn White is left out because he is still young, and Todd Lodwick because he never won a medal despite being in his sixth Olympics.  Mancuso always seems to come out of nowhere for the Olympics, but she doesn't seem very fast right now.  So that leaves the three guys, with Demong, Miller (36) having the most medals and peaking at the right time, and Ligety being a favorite to medal. I vote Bode too, because it is likely his last shot and he will leave nothing on the table.  Taking appropriate risks, working hard and having success, and doing things your own way when necessary personifies the spirit of the USA.  Plus, Bode would likely carry the flag in one hand.  If Bill Marolt has a say, it won't be Bode Miller.

Shaun White is not young. He is 27, but he is in a sport where the majority of athletes are done with their careers at about 25. Snowboarding and freestyle skiing are punishing sports, because each new trick and most little mistakes result in punishing falls. Doing that enough takes a toll on your body very quickly. Shaun White has been the best halfpipe snowboarder in the world for over a decade. That is an extremely long time in action sports. It's kind of like an 18 year old female gymnast. 18 years old is young in any objective sense, but in the context of that sport, it is too old to be competing at the highest level. Same with snowboarding. Shaun White's career as a snowboarder is much closer to its sunset than it is to its sunrise. This is without a doubt his last Olympics, so he is definitely somebody who should be in the discussion for the flag bearer.

So long as the honor doesn't go to a curler...

I dunno... curling is my last hope to make the Olympics. I haven't ever actually curled, but its the only sport where the majority of competitors aren't younger than me.

Below is the complete list of flag bearers.  Sixteen countries love alpine skiers, but not the USA.  Too bad, since Bode--not Svindal-- is the favorite tomorrow.
