How is Utah (around Salt Lake City) in mid-March for skiing?

Thread Starter

I'm planning long-deserved family vacation in March.

How is Utah (around Salt Lake City) in mid-March for skiing? Is it still mid-winter or spring-like?  (Here in the Northeast, it really depends on the year, but it's usually spring skiing in mid-March, or even worse if Mother nature decides to throw a curveball.)

I've skied 14" of fresh powder in April. Your biggest concern is finding out when is spring break.

Usually great. However, last couple of years there has been a week in march that was very spring like. Just depends on whether it's that week.

Went last year in late March and it was great. Some spring skiing, some powder, not crowded at all. Going back again this year in mid march

As others have said, it's a very good bet but not a sure thing.

Then again, nothing is a sure thing with this sport.

TIP: if it's on the warm side, pick your hill based on elevation - the CC resorts are higher than PC, SB, etc and will tend to have better snow late in the season.

^^This.^^ Spring break is around when non-maniacal skiers start switching to summer sports, so non-holiday, non-spring-break skiing is generally a spacious experience. I often wonder how Alta can afford to keep lifts running for several dozen weekday skiers before they go to weekends-only in April.

Good time to go.

I've had spring conditions in January and 18" powder days in April in Utah.

We usually go the last week of March and it has been hit or miss. 2012 was our last trip to Park City and it was mid-60F and sunny, with runs getting closed as we were there due to melt-off.  2011 we got fresh pow. Hope for the best, plan for whatever.

I will go again without a doubt.

As someone who has lived in the Wasatch since 1986 I would say that Park City is pretty good for skiing in March as opposed to say Florida.
