I'll be there to see it first hand.  I'll do a trip report when we get back.

I'll be waiting :popcorn

And I'll feature it on the home page!!

Years ago I was involved with an eastern bloc architect building embassies and the 'tactics' the blogger mentions are nothing new. But the builders are really stupid if they think they can take short cuts with impunity.

Some embassy building are built, in effect, transmitting devices...and I am not talking about putting listening devices in the windows or walls.  That is why the USA tore down the one in Moscow.

~~Squashing some rumours. Hi everyone, I am completely overwhelmed by the response from my post about my first few days in Sochi. What was meant to be a simple update to family and friends went crazy. I do however have to squash a few rumours but before I do I really want to get this out there. EVERYTHING I WRITE IS MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, IT DOES NOT REFLECT OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE I HAVE WORKED WITH IN THE PAST, PRESENT OR THE FUTURE. THIS IS JUST ME, THAT’S ALL, NOBODY ELSE. 1. I am safe and fine. Yes, I am heading home, no, I was not forced to leave. I left by my own accord. 2. Me leaving Sochi will have zero effect on the Olympic Games. I am simply just one of a group of guys who do what I do. The head builder is still there as well as the other shapers. There is plenty of snow on the mountain and the course will be ready and will be amazing. There is a group of very talented people working there and it will be fine. 3. I removed the post myself while I was there, just to be safe. I have since reposted it with a few minor edits. 4. I do stand by what I wrote and it is a 100% true account of what went down and what I observed in my first few days. 5. There is most definitely more to come. I have been keeping notes and there is plenty more for me to write about. Also, one more thing. Like I said, I am completely overwhelmed by the response to my post. If you want to contact me directly, you can email me at threeseventeen@yahoo.com or even personal message me on here. As for facebook, I try to keep facebook private for just me and my actual friends, not social media friends. If you want to stay in touch and see what else I get up to, you can always just like my company page on facebook. Just look up Three Seven Teen and click like. Or you could try twitter but i don’t use it all that much. @JBalfour317 Thanks again and keep your eyes out for my next update that will be coming soon.

If that's the worst of it, maybe it's a bit better than I expected.  I don't know which of those pics relates to actual venues or accomodations for the games.  But on the whole, where'd the $50 billion go!?!?  :-)

For their defence it's easy to drive around ANY town and find unfisnished construction/trash, espercially one where there had been lots of recent construction...

I'm certain the main stuff that will be on TV will be OK and the rest will be somewhat cleaned up.

Good from far, but far from good.

Is it just me or does that torch (or what I'm guessing is the torch) in the center of the park look like Olympic Stadium in Montreal?

Yeah, people are unhappy if they aren't paid.  I'll bet Russia pulls it off, though.  This reminds me of when I lived in Boston some 25 years ago.  They were doing construction on 93 and this TV reporter corners Dematteo (the head guy from the construction company bearing his name) and asks him how bad the penalties will be  for finishing the work late.  It seemed there was no way the work could be finished on time, with construction going on everywhere, massive cranes, trucks and other construction equipment blocking the roads, miles of Jersey barriers that had to be moved, etc.  The guy with his yellow hard hat and big belly calmly says, "It will be finished on time in 48 hours."  It was.
