EpicSki owned by Huddler or OnTheSnow

Thread Starter

Saw this comment recently. I though EpicSki was purchased by Huddler from the original founders?

Guesses anyone?

Has EpicSki been purchased from Hudder by OnTheSnow?

Huddler never owned Epic. Epic decided to use their software instead of vbulletin. Vail (as Mountain News) bought Epic from Nolo. As far as I understand, OntheSnow is just another entity under that umbrella.

Huddler makes/manages the forum software, I'd imagine for a % of advertising revenue.

Epicski is owned by OntheSnow, Huddler supplies the platform and software.

How much did they pay for Epicski?  Maybe I'll start GaperSki.com and sell it to Vail in a few years.

Here's the full story, going back as far as my memory takes me (I wasn't here in the AC and ssh days, but neither were most people that are still around).

Sometime before 2009 when I joined: Joan (nolo) took over the day to day operations of EpicSki as site president. I believe while she was the principle owner, there were other stake holders.

c. 2009: EpicSki transitioned from vBulletin to be the first ever site to try the new Huddler software platform. In exchange for handling the technical/(some of the) advertising they were given a percentage of the site revenue. Around this time is when Supporter membership stopped keeping the lights on and instead EpicSki became an ad-supported site.

2013 EpicSki was bought from Joan and co. by Mountain News Corporation. Chief among their holdings is OnTheSnow.com. We are owned by the same company that runs OnTheSnow, which is ultimately owned by Vail since 2010, but we are technically sister sites with OnTheSnow. Huddler is still the software provider, but no longer owners of the site.

Hope this clears up your questions.

Edited to clear up a misstatement about Huddler's role as a revenue share partner, not actually an owner.

Apparently Huddler characterizes EpicSki as a "Men's Lifestyle" forum.  See http://www.huddler.com/site-showcase/

Question:  for iPhone access, is there a native app for EpicSki?   or for Huddler?  Or do you have to just use a browser to access EpicSki?

Thanks for any info

Just browse to EpicSki.com there is a native app for it. If it doesn't auto detect it down at the very bottom of the page there is a Desktop/Mobile button to switch over.

Didn't see that coming I bet!

I'm looking into that, but we don't really fit into any of their other categories either. I'd say maybe change it to just Lifestyles, but most the other sites in that list I know are 90% male demographically.

How about sports?

How could it be that simple?

We could I guess have The Sand Trap (golf) and Striper Online (Bass Fishing) combined with EpicSki to make a Sports forum.

I see the Desktop/Mobile button, but I don't find a native app.  I've gone to the Apple App Store & searched "epicski" and also "huddler".  I haven't found a native app there.

There isn't one. Use the mobile button on the site and your browser.

Just the mobile site. You will find it is quite effective, there is no need for platform specific apps.

My dumb phone does not do app's. :duck:   A tiny Acer netbook w/Firefox works fine for me.

Agree. Have had no trouble with iOS devices. Please keep Epic away from Tapatalk, BTW. Not worth the headaches.

And maybe I'll just start JongSki.com so there is an appropriate alter ego.

Balance. It is all about balance.

You can load epicski through Tapatalk, but it doesn't work very well.
