Best Place To Ski In May?

Thread Starter

I am looking to schedule an international ski trip during the month of May (starting the second week of May). Unsure as to where has some of the best skiing during the month of May. I have never skied outside of North America and am looking for somewhere abroad to visit during this time such as Japan or anywhere in Europe.

Anyone know of some great places to ski during early to mid may?

Thank you for the reply and suggestion, but this is in North America and I have already had the privilege to ski Mammoth. Looking for some new territory.

Here's a place to start for high altitude European ski areas:

If you are flying over Colorado, it would be easy and cheap to stop for a few days at Arapahoe Basin.   Given the lower altitudes, it's hard to imagine Europe could be any better... skiing at least :)

Here's the trip report from the Epic Ski Mother's day gathering at A-basin last year which ended up being a powder fest:

Given the start to the season, this would be the year for a Mammoth skier to consider a late season trip to A-basin.

Tignes, France has a glacier and might be decent.  Same with Zermatt, I believe.  Check closing dates for Val Thorens.  There are a few glaciers in Austria, but I haven't skied them and can't think of the names off the top of my head.  You would have much bigger choices in Europe if you were talking mid April instead of mid May as a lot of resorts have closed by then even if they have enough snow.

It's called "Ski Dubai" unless they changed it in the last few months.  Skied there this July.  Was a fun experience for what it was.  I was already in Dubai so it was on my list of must do's, especially since it was 110 degrees outside. :eek
