LOUD Explosion while passing truck! For the required ski related content - I was going skiing!

LOUD Explosion while passing truck! Happened while driving up steep grade on Interstate 70 near the tunnels at about 10,500 ft in elevation. I was traveling from Pennsylvania to Colorado high (elevation not that other stuff.) country.

I was passing a large 'CDOT' flatbed when the explosion happened. At first I thought one of the tires on the truck had a catastrophic failure and I'd be seeing tire tread coming of the truck. Nothing was happening with the truck, he was driving fine.

So I slowed down thinking I had blown a tire out. Car was handling fine. No apparent issues.

I continued to the next exit 1/2 mile or so. Stopped and did a walk around. Nothing apparently damaged with the car. Big mystery. What the heck happened?

I continued to the tunnels and to my destination. Still didn't find any problems.

Three days later I found the damage from the explosion. Suicide bomber bag of corn chips. The sea level packed bag just gave up and ruptured with an explosive sound.

Anyway Skiing has been great. Lungs/Legs still getting used to altitude.

Ha!  Funny.

First time opening toothpaste at altitude is fun too =)

Have fun, ski safe!

The reverse situation when you clean out the car in the lowlands can be amusing too.  Empty but recapped water bottles become interesting sculptures.

(Fortunately water bottles are strong enough to go to altitude.  I know from jumping on them during a really boring meeting that they are really hard to burst -- actually, the cap fails first.  Be careful if you experiment,  its really unstable and a good way to hurt yourself.)

edit - a few too many "really"s in that last bit.  But I guess it really doesn't matter, I'll let it stand...

As a General Aviation pilot, exploding chip bags are so common that I never carry chips out of a bag. At least that way they don't make a mess of the plane. I will be in trouble when plastic bags are banned...

Ali Pine, good story. Bags always explode at the time when the scariness factor is maximized. The crinkling water bottles can be unsettling too. Maybe I'm getting spooked too easily - but my plane is getting older.

Last summer, we took a camping trip that took us North on US 550 from Durango. 3 bags of chips in the car.

1 let loose at the top of Coal Bank Pass.

1 let loose at the top of Molas.

Last at the top of Red Mountain.

It was uncanny- they all let go within about 300 feet of the summit.
