@Bob Lee Maybe we should do something like this: do a survey to find out what is the maximum safe speed and distance that skiers on the mountain think are acceptable. Then pick the minimal value for the speed limit and maximum value for distance limit. Everyone adhere to that when another skier is in sight. That ought to be safe. And when a patroller sees an out of control skier, pull his/her pass.
If this is your ideal skiing environment, then please disregard all what I have said before. Otherwise please take a moment to think about this: Not every out of control skier is deserved to get their pass pulled, or "punished" for that matter. The cause of this out of control is still important in a rational environment, and a rational thing to do is to learn about the story fully first before deciding on the appropriate correction method.
If we all get very emotional, and show more than enough compassion towards the victim, fairness and justice are already lost.
