I know, we're nuts. Very early tomorrow morning my son Vince and I are motoring west from Northern Virginia to Aspen, Colorado. The plan is to drive out in two days, ski for five, then drive back in two days. We hope to ski one day each at Ajax, Snowmass, and Aspen Highlands. Then we're going to stop for two days at Loveland before heading home. It's not that I'm afraid of flying. It's just that I'm a cheap son of a gun and don't have any frequent flyer miles. Plus, we both have end of the year vacation time to burn and traveling by car allows a little wiggle room in the schedule.
How good are early season conditions this winter in Colorado? How good are Aspen and Loveland for crowd avoidance during the Christmas Holidays? Loveland is a frugal travelers dream, but can a skinflint survive at a resort like Aspen during the priciest time of the year? Vince has never skied Aspen. I always considered it one of my favorite ski vacation destinations in the US, but haven't been there in over 20 years. Will it meet our expectations? We're hitting the road to find out. Our planned ski days are Dec 29-Jan 2 and we hope to post daily updates in this thread with photos, commentary and possibly video as we undertake another father and son road warrior ski trip.
