Vonn Skies out, Kaufmann-Abderhalden Wins Downhill

VAL D'ISERE, France December 21, 2013 (AP)

Lindsey Vonn skied out and clutched her knee in pain in the World Cup downhill race won by Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden of Switzerland on Saturday.

Vonn, with boyfriend Tiger Woods watching on in the finish area, lost her balance and her left ski went up in the air, putting all her weight on her surgically repaired right knee as she skied off course.

She didn't fall but grimaced as she pulled up, clutching her knee in a worrying sign ahead of the Sochi Olympics. However, Vonn remains optimistic that she can be ready for Sochi.

IMHO she needs to figure out what's more important, Sochi or her future seasons...
Because right now she is risking both...

Unfortunately, today's race did not go as well as I had hoped. I was skiing well and in contention for a podium finish when my knee gave out on me in a turn. I'm fighting as hard as I can to keep my Olympic dream alive but skiing with no ACL is harder than I expected. I'm going see how my knee responds over the next few days and make a plan going forward. Fingers crossed! Xo Lindsey

Maybe I'm projecting a little, but I thought it looked at least as much like grief as pain. Poor stubborn thing. It's got to kill her to have to pull back when her whole life is all about go, go, go!

Really? Who would have guessed??? 😒
I'm really sorry for her but she and her team need to get their heads together...

Very sad but it seems that Lindsey Vonn's Olympic career might be over.
Not an ideal way for great athlete and good ambassador of the sport to go out.
It is hard to believe that she would still be competing in time for South Korea, but Sochi is out for her. frown.gif
NBC can upgrade their skiing coverage with new "on the slopes" reporter !?

Vonn will not compete in Sochi and will be having another surgery: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2014/01/07/sports/olympics/ap-oly-ski-vonn-out.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

Why do you think she won't compete in Korea? She isn't 30 yet and when healthy is completely dominant. If she can repair her knee she will be back strong. She has two more World Championships between now and Korea anyway.

Hopefully she'll do a plan 'B'.... B for Bode. Take a full season off, heal and rehab properly, get back on it, get her remaining victories to surpass Moser-Proell for all time WC wins.

she's bailed out of Sochi
