Pop quiz -- How many skis can fit in a Sonic Alpine (Thule) cargo box?

Actually this is a serious question.

Someone in my neck of the woods is selling his Thule Sonic Alpine box. For those unfamiliar, this is probably the smallest cargo box from Thule. It is the sleek, low profile one and comes with "speed dimples" to minimize air drag. I don't care about the dimples and all (I have a couple of nice ones myself - thank you.) but I am interested only because its minimalist height allows me to drive into my garage.

With that said, I am concerned that it might not fit six skis that I bring with me on trips upstate and to Vermont. I read somewhere that the internal attaching mechanism (to the cross bars) take up so much space that the box will only take a limited number of skis.

Thanks for all the replies.

If height is an issue, Inno makes a lowdown Cruiser that is pretty low.

Thanks Phil. the Inno can fit all my skis but I can get that Sonic from this guy at a much cheaper price. He just wants to get rid of it but before I even make him an offer (or drive over) I want to know if this thing realistically fits six skis. Maybe even just five (as I can put the kid's ski in the trunk).

The seller owns a bike shop and has no idea how many skis can fit in the box. A customer ordered it but never came to pick it up. Anyway, I bought it already at 50% off retail and from my observations, this thing will easily fit five skis, even six if positioned properly.

Bring 5-6 pairs of skis over and see how many fit in. You want a deal...put some effort into earning it.

I finally put on the Thule Sonic (Alpine) and loaded it up for our four day trip to Vermont. Despite the really low profile (for aerodynamic reasons), I was able to load the following:

- Rossi Soul7 180cm
- Volkl Supersports 175cm
- K2 Superstitious 160+ (forget length)
- K2 Superstitious 153cm
- K2 Superstitious 146cm
- Rossignol kids ski 110cm
- Atomic kids ski 100cm
- Five pairs of poles
- A school backpack
- A pair of mens ski boots
- five big towels (to separate the skis)

The poles were somewhat of a nuisance so I had to position the skis well to close the hatch. I would highly recommend this Sonic Alpine as a box. Really low profile and very aerodynamic. Didn't even hear any wind noise from the top while driving at 80 to 85 mph. Maybe those dimples really work. I could also open the box from both sides. But the nice kicker is that I could park indoor and still have a lower effective roof than many SUVS.

I don't recommend putting unusually heavy items (like boots) in the nose or far rear of a ski box.  It can cause sagging that might lead to cracking.  The nose of my box sags a tad, came used that way.  It still seals tight with some additional weather stripping I added.  But, knowing what I know I wouldn't put anything with significant weight beyond the cross bars under the box.  I don't think they are made to handle that.

That's good to know. I ended putting a boot each in the front and back as the trunk was already filled up. I rarely ever travel with this much stuff anyway and this trip was one of those big ones we rarely make. Really happy with the box though and if there was something I need, it is now a step stool or tire step so i could peer inside whenever I load stuff into it. Right now, I have to put a towel on one of the seats and step on it.
