Alta Finally Getting Some! 12-19-13

Weather forecasts were not calling for much out of the storm that came in late last night. Maybe a few inches. At 5AM Alta was reporting 5" and still snowing. It basically snowed all day. No crowds either. So it was a good day!:yahoo:

I think it's safe to say it was more than 5" when the lifts started spinning....

Lots of powder was found between the lines, trees, or just about any where...

Even late in the day Pow was readily available for the schralping!!!

It was still snowing when we left. At least another 5" had fallen during our adventure.

Thanks for the touch o' stoke.

ETA: Alta admits to 11" in its 4:20 pm snow report. biggrin.gif

Ha. The only place on earth that underreports....

Yeah, it's always a nice surprise once you get there. Usually the pic of the day reveals a lot, if they get around to posting it. Looks like tomorrow afternoon will be a nice time to shake off the rust if I can extricate myself from biz in town.

I wonder where they measure their snow. confused.gif

For the last couple of days the NOAA forecast has been calling for 3-7 inches Wednesday night and 4-8 Thursday. I'd say they hit it right in the middle. Looks like you had fun! I'm looking forward to Mineral opening this weekend with all the new snow sitting there waiting for me!

I have the feeling there will be a lot of people looking forward to the same thing. Could see the Mineral Basin Express spinning from the Alta side today. Plus, what I would assume were quite a few tracks from Patrol making sure, everything will be safe for Saturday.

Last I checked Alta was only at 22 trails open. Will most of it be open by mid January? I'm thinking of coming in the 13-16 and have been a bit gunshy on buying my ticket.

Not sure where you saw that. I've been at Alta the last week and most of the mountain is open. You do have to be careful off piste, but this past round of snow really helped.

If by "open" you mean groomed, that looks about right according to the mountain report. I won't opine on what happens elsewhere, especially with new snow.

I use On The Snow ski report app on ios and it is showing 22 of 116 trails open. And the Weather Channel is showing Alta at 18%. But then mountain report doesn't talk about trails open, just groomed which comes out to 23 trails.

But 6 of 7 lifts going sounds like most of the mountain is open, except for the steeper stuff. Is that about right?

Opensnow.com shows 90% of the mountain is open and that feels right. There is still a lot of steep stuff that is open (High T, Supreme, Catherine's, Wildcat, etc.).

It looks like the 6-10 they were forecasting was a little aggressive and that we'll end up with more like 3-6. Oh well, still will be a fun day!

The closed lift, Albion, is almost never open.  It runs parallel to Sunnyside and accesses mostly green runs.  It only runs when there is a big enough crowd on Sunnyside to make it worth while.

I would say there's plenty of steep stuff open at Alta to keep you entertained. I sure wasn't bored the 3 days I was there.

Alta snowed way deeper than the 4" afternoon report indicates. I picked up face shots on High Rustler on my last run at 4:15. Another awesome day!
