Sorry, But no Demo @ Mammoth

I was really hoping to have a demo of the 2015 skis at Mammoth a la the demo we had at Mt. Rose a few years back but Mammoth is not being co opperative and wants to charge us for the access to the area that is usually used for such events. I tried to explain that we will be bringing 50-60 to their resort and spending money in the Mammoth community over the course of 3-5 days and to the financial tune of $15-20K but they were unwilling to budge. The question then arises, how important is the demo? Mt. Rose confirmed they would love to have us back but that would require not doing Mammoth at all and doing the 5 days on the North Shore of Tahoe. Personally, I would prefer to keep the itinerary the same and just not do the demo because Mammoth is a sweet mountain to experience. Any thoughts?

Wow, pretty lame Mammoth.  I vote no change to the schedule.

Too bad about the Demo being cancelled.  Actually, I wasn't planning on getting in on that but it would have been a blast for everybody else.

I won't know if I can commit to going to Mammoth in the spring 'till the end of Feb.  I definitely want to but I don't know yet, depends on a couple to things.  I'm just interested in hanging out in the Mammoth area, I haven't ever skied there and have always wanted to - this is my chance!  I have been down in the The Eastern Sierra years ago in the fall messing around and was blown away by the country.

If things change, and the gathering goes to the Tahoe region, I'm won't be showing up.  Tahoe is great, I've skied around there a couple of trips but that was enough for me.

Phil,

Is it possible to do this at Alpine ????

Or is KSL just as difficult ????

I have done demos at Alpine, it is a PITA because you have to go all the way down to the parking lot (Mammoth is 30 paces from the lift) and it will be more difficult with keeping the riff raff out. I can talk to KSL and the reps if they are up for it.

I am going to put a call into my connection at KSL and check out some options for Alpine.

Are they willing to work a deal on their in-house demos instead, then? Would it be possible to work something out with Footloose in town, even if the skis can't be swapped out? I'll be at Footloose in early January if there's any help I can give by asking, etc.

Mammoth never has demo events, or if they do, they don't advertise them. It stinks. I forgive them because they do offer REALLY good military discounts, to both AD and their dependents. And the mountain itself doesn't suck ;)

Phil,

I understand the Alpine situation is sub optimal, But It seems like Mammoth does not want to cooperate.

I just hope we don't loose the demo day at the spring gathering

Thanks for working through this

I'm going to investigate the demo situation further.  Mammoth is a big place with multiple base areas.  Maybe there are prime sites at Main Lodge and Chair 2 where they would charge, but we could figure out a different place.

It looks like the Sierra is having another snow challenged season.  I'm not saying it won't snow big a few times between now and late March.  But with below normal base depths, Squaw/Alpine will deteriorate much more in spring than Mammoth, last year being a prime example.  So you do NOT want to pull this Gathering out of Mammoth.

That said, I agree the demo situation is disappointing and thus I'll take my shot at it.

Somewhere hidden in the woods back by chair 12?? Woolly's Woods? (Half serious, half facetious :D)

June?? Of course if the winter doesn't ramp up, June will be pretty sad by then, too, won't it?

I don't think that loosing a demo day at Mammoth is grounds for moving that part of the Gathering elsewhere. I have a MC Pass and will be skiing Mammoth for at least 2 days or more regardless.

Tony, I am going to check other options, please do NOT contact Mammoth until you hear from me.

Totally 2nd what @JayT said. I seem to remember they USED TO have days where a mfg had a little demo tent set up. Thanks for working on this, Phil.

ps @Philpug/@Trekchick  -- i posted this below on my FB page, with a link to this thread. will remove if you think it hurts the cause. let me know.

"Come on, Mammoth, don't you see it would be a win-win for the corp AND the community?"

Bummer, but I also have an MC pass and was planning to use the 2 days at Mammoth for this.  So my vote is to still have a few days of skiing there.  :-)

All things being equal, I really do NOT want to move the event. Tony is checking his sources and I am also working on another option with Alpine.

I also vote for no move -- I am looking forward to skiing at Mammoth

Isn't the point to ski Mammoth? The Demo events I thought were bonus extras.

Phil,

Time to put out a we aint changing the dates come hell or high water post (deep powder ???)

Fact is there was no mention anywhere of changing anything around except a possible demo location change if Mammoth becomes too uncooperative.

I am in the same situation. Plus I've never been to Mammoth.

No worries on keeping it at Mammoth. I am seeing what I can do about the demo. Right now is a tough week to contact marketing people at other resorts.

Anybody interested in demoing or renting skis at the Mammoth Gathering? I have arranged for all Epic skiers to receive a 20% discount from the Main Lodge demo/rental shop. See Bill Glynn (demo shop general manager) and tell him you are with the Epic group to receive your discount.

UPDATE! Checked with Bill  to confirm the demo discount and he will not be working Sunday and Monday, but he said he will leave word that he has authorized the 20% discount. Tell the employees in the Demo Shop that you're with the Epic Ski Group and mention that Bill approved  the discount. He will be in Tuesday and Wednesday if you want to Demo then.
