Today was after the first big dump of the year so there was no track prepared, I skied on the snowcat treat pattern, however there are many sections with untracked powder (I was the first and only skier).
What I found however is XC skis absolutely suck on fresh powder. On uphill sections I tried to do herringbone, however the tread pattern is only so wide, so my tips get caught in the fresh snow to the sides and dig themselves deeper and deeper till I trip over and fall flat on my face. Flat section on powder is equally miserable, the skis sink in and impossible to turn, and also keep digging themselves deeper. I went a whole 10 or 15 yards before decide backing out is a good idea.
So is there a different technique required, or should I not attempt powder to begin with on these narrow skis?
Also thinking of taking them to the local mole hill to try some green runs, don't know if they'll let me on the lift yet, am I nuts?
