Autoplaying ski videos

I appreciate getting content on Epic's home page, but I had to close a tab which autoplayed a race when I hit the site; I hit pause so I could finish what I was doing, and a few minutes later I must have hit a key combination that started it up again, and since I didn't know how it happened I just closed it.

Weren't we getting rid of autoplaying videos on the home page? I recognize this is valuable content, but I hate autoplay. Really I do!

This has come up before.  If a video auto-plays on your home page there is a X in the upper right corner.  If you click that, the video will not show up again.

This was someone's brilliant idea to put valuable race content on the home page.  I shut it down immediately as it is inappropriate for a work computer.

...meaning you click on the X? Geez, I just checked and the race video is gone. I did want to watch it eventually. mad.gif

Reload the page and it will be back.

No it won't. I'm not sure how to get it back once that happens. I think we have to resubmit the video on our end for it to reset.

Actually, I use Flashblock, and after I refreshed the page I noticed a 'play' arrow over a large pic at the top off the page. I clicked on it and the ski jumping competition played.

Tyler, if this was something we could control and allow to play when wanted, and not like some piece of bad spam, it would be really nice.  How about letting Huddler know, it's not a bad idea, just badly implemented.

Check with @Trekchick but I believe the way it is configured that autoplay functionality is something Universal Sports is controlling. I believe Huddler just provides the functionality to embed it, but I could be wrong. If Tricia doesn't know I can ping Huddler.

The video player on the home page is by Universal Sports.  They are advertising with us and providing current video highlights of ski events.

There is an option to dismiss it with the X in the upper right hand corner if you choose to not see that video.

This is one of the key advertisers who helps us keep the lights on and they also provide the video's.  I'm glad that they allow us the option of dismissing it if someone  is not interested in the player.

That is correct.  To make it reappear for one person it will reappear for everyone, which can be dismissed again on an individual basis.

We're working on an option to make it reappear on a personal basis.

@Trekchick is there a way to configure it so it doesn't auto play though?
Just avoid the home page and go directly to subscriptions, then New Posts. Put links in your menu bar.

Not at this time.
It may be something that Huddler can work on.  I'll re-initiate the discussion about that.

We're working on a way to get it back if you want to see it in the future.

TC, I posted a thread over in Suggestions before I saw this one -- can someone look into having the audio ads muted by default?  I don't mind seeing the video highlights if they come up muted, but it's really annoying if it starts blaring an ad at me every time I go to the homepage.

Having it not autoplay would be nice, but maybe Universal's insisting on that.

FlashBlock in FF/Chrome should stop things like that from playing automatically, if users are looking for a workaround.

Many of our members, myself included, check Epicski from work. Anything that automatically plays sounds is unacceptable in that environment.  It's a good way to chase away members and views of anyone not logged in.  There has to be an option to manually start the video or IMHO the feature is a drawback and hurts the site regardless of good intentions to sponsor the site.  Advertising allows Epicski to exist, but I think we need to have minimum standards, and since we started advertising, one of those has always been we don't auto-play audio/video ads.

I thought there was a mute or quieter setting for the video but its not available on our end.

I understand that this is disruptive to some who log on to EpicSki from work, but the only thing that you can do at this point is dismiss it or enter EpicSki through new posts or subscriptions instead of through the home page.

I believe this feature will be fine tuned a bit more in the coming months but this is what we have available to us for this advertiser at this time.

The actual video comes up muted, but the ad that runs before the video defaults to having audio on.  There's a button you can hit to mute it, but it comes up playing the audio every time.  Maybe it's something the advertiser can tweak?

Not a huge problem, just thought I'd see if it could be easily fixed.  It seems like someone just has to flip a default setting somewhere.

This is what we're working on.  We have a message in to the advertiser about how this can be tweaked.
