Ski warmth seemed like a very, very important factor. I didn't let the ski cool down all the way after I did the heat gun sealing test, and the spot where the ski was still warm burned way faster.
So really, I think "X degrees will burn a base in Y seconds" will depend on whether you are waxing in a warm room or outside in a shed, on the thickness of your iron's sole plate, perhaps even on your wax.
