I will do that if my boss doesn't take on my idea of trading my X'mas week with the Utah gathering. I too, prefer to work Christmas and ski during non-holidays

Thanks for the quick response!  How's the drive from SLC to JH/Targhee in winter?  Would it make sense for me to book airfare to SLC so I can make a call last minute on where to go from there?

My ski safari last year to Big Sky started in SLC.  Doing that again in Jan.  Driving up to JH first.  For a Dec trip, I wouldn't worry about the drive.  There are several ways to go.  Some have less mountain driving than others.

Can't go wrong being in SLC with a car in mid-Dec.

Targhee is opening next week.  Sounds like plenty of snow all over already. :)

That said Steamboat, the safest early season bet in the region, has had 83 inches and rates to be good by mod-December with high probability.

As for the crowd part if that bothers you, you need to get off the beaten track. Fernie has a 51 inch base already and will have a preview opening this weekend. Perhaps sibhusky can tell us if nearby Whitefish also has a lot of early snow. Schweitzer is also having a preview weekend.

SLC is still attractive Chrusmas week because
1. You can stay in the city and not pay jacked up holiday resort lodging prices
2. Secondary areas like Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin and Powder Mt won't be that crowded

Sorry for the delay, wasn't following this one and almost missed it (hey, @Tony Crocker, we have this new feature using the @ sign which sends notices out to people).

I think the OP pretty much has his mind made up and hasn't even considered our region.  But, for anyone else, most of the surrounding resorts are opening this weekend.  Last weekend, there were apparently HUNDREDS of skiers skinning up for what are supposed to be the best early season conditions in recent years.  HOWEVER, although the last few days have been pretty frigid, it's been sunny and more precip is not on the horizon until next week.  The summit had 52 inches on Tuesday.  I suspect that we will be in fine shape, they are blowing snow and packing it on the lower slopes.  However, they are NOT OPENING EARLY at this point.  I think it highly unlikely that they would attempt to open before the scheduled opening on Dec. 7 as even in the one year that we had a killer La Nina and opened with 100% of the terrain open on opening day they did not attempt to open early.

I suspect that the whole northern Rockies/Powder Highway region is having similar conditions, but Tony keeps track of this stuff.  I only worry about my own little world.  :D

Looking around, I can't tell who is updating their snow depths yet, I wouldn't rely on them if they haven't actually opened.

I took a look at the Webcam today, and there must have been a lot of folks skinning up the mtn? Conditions looked sweet! I'm keeping the Ghee on the radar, along with Northern ID, and MT as possible options for 2nd week of December ski safari.

Just booked our flights to SLC...headed out late on 12/13 and returning mid day on 12/24. I'll book a few places with free cancellation and choose one a few days out. Can't wait!

I appreciate all the help!
