We understand the frustration, I am getting it too...we have our best people on it.

I apologize that all of you are having issues since this release, but the hard part of it is that it's actually a bug within the Safari browser rather than with EpicSki, it's just because EpicSki uses a standards compliant technology more than most site you browse (and this new update uses it in a new way) that it's most noticeable here on EpicSki.

In short this is the problem: The current versions of Safari have a bug with how they handle Java, Java being the web technology that among other things, is the technology behind the new functionality of saving draft versions of your posts. I have been personally corresponding with someone who is beta testing the next release of the Safari web browser and confirms that there are no issues with the site in that version. Apple has seen and acknowledged this issue as a fault on their end.

The gentleman testing the new version told me this:

Quote:

It's a known issue at this point. Until Safari 6.1.1 or Mac OS X 10.9.1 ships, which fixes the issues with Safari. The work-around for now is to use a different browser. Even OmniWeb works fine despite sharing a lot of the rendering engine with Safari (the JS engine isn't as shared as WebKit).

Users can go back to Safari when 6.1.1/10.9.1 ships (10.9.1 will contain an updated version of Safari 7, while 6.1.1 will be for those staying with 10.7 or 10.8).

The Dev team obviously is in the unenviable position of the fact that they can't fix it because it's nothing they have control over. However I am working with them personally to see ways that we can alleviate the issue until Apple fixes things. In the mean time using just about any other browser should function fine. They reported this to me about thirty minutes ago:

Quote:
WRT to the Safari 7 browser bug, we are investigating if there are any segments of Javascript code that trigger the browser bug to see if we can either alter the code or deactivate it to create a more stable runtime.  I can't make many promises because there are several layers of software between us and the crash site that we have no visibility into so we are limited to an experiment-based investigation.

Yep me too!  I'm on a Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5 system with a Safari Browser.  Had my MacBook Pro for almost a year and never had ANY problems.  I was trying to post something  in a thread @Epic Ski and kept on going out of the 'net and I would have to log back in to Epic Ski.  It was a real pain in the @%$, I was getting pissed.  Seems like it isn't doing it now.

Huddler has disabled the Draft functionality for now until Apple gets things fixed on their end.

Thread Starter

Thanks all, I am sure its just as frustrating to you as well.

litterbug has another thread just started with similar problems on Firefox, so not so fast to blame Safari.

Good decision to disable the drafts function.  Never needed a drafts function before, but definitely need the ability to reply to posts!

I believe litterbugs post is unrelated to this, I've been mobile all day and need to unpack from being at a conference all weekend and a drive through the mountains back home today. I was just informed that of all times Apple just pushed out the OS X and Safari release that fixes this problem. We are still sorting things out, but please upgrade to the newest version of your Apple software and we should have drafts and a stable Safari.

Just installed the latest OS upgrade so let me see if it works  :)

No crashing so far

so far

Yes, but drafts is disabled so it won't crash.

Has anyone on Mountain Lion or before had this problem or is only a Mavericks issue?  The update is for Mavericks.

Thats true, but we are testing on other sites and for them the update has fixed the issue. I thought Apple products were supposed to "just work". :duck:

They don't work when people developing websites do most of their testing and development on PC's.  People have been ignoring minority interests for years.  Apple was supposed to go under 20 years ago as they had only 5% of the computer market.  They've survived and thrived in spite of these problems.

The fact that they work so well is even more amazing considering.

Just got the "Do you want to leave or stay on the page" error message when I clicked reply.

Mavericks update installed.

Drafts are still off.

Must be my fault, couldn't be Huddlers.

Not to burst your oppressed minority bubble, but Safari is the most popular browser on EpicSki as well as several other Huddler forums (including Apple Insider forums). Web developers rely on the browser makers to be standards compliant. Even pathetic Internet Explorer 6 can handle Java to run the new editor feature that Safari can't. But hey Apple can do no wrong so couldn't be their fault.

The other issue is ticketed and being addressed.

Mavericks has been out for a while.  If the problem is known than Huddler shouldn't have changed their code knowing that in your words the most popular browser on Epicski doesn't work with it.

Everything has been just fine since Mavericks came out.  The problems appeared with the latest build of the Huddler platform.   If Apple changed something back in Mavericks why did Huddler release a version that didn't work with the Apple change?

(And yes Apple does screw up all kinds of things, but the problems did not start with Mavericks, they started with Huddler's release.)

Sheesh.

And I'm not just trying to be difficult here.  Many of us have lost posts and been extremely frustrated by this problem which did not exist a couple of weeks ago - long after the non-compliant problem you claim caused this existed.

Bottom line is you don't release software, or update a complex web environment without testing it on existing platforms.  Everything you say would be valid if Apple changed something AFTER the Huddler release.

Which is a fair point. The release exacerbated an existing issue that Huddler may or may not have not been aware of and was not caught in their testing. I would like to think they wouldn't purposefully role out a feature that would break things. Especially being much more familiar with how they work than anyone else here, I know they have no problem pushing releases until a later date if they think it's not polished enough for mainstream yet. It's happened a few times this year, the mobile site was delayed 6 weeks IIRC to make sure it wasn't overly buggy. Saved drafts has been one of the most asked for features by other sites though so it was an existing problem for some users apparently.
