I want ski pants with these features

- softshell material with fleece backing

- trim fit (not like tights or a race suit but *not* loose like most ski pants - more like old school woolen stretchy race pants)

- warmer than nordic pants

- side zips

Under Armour come *very* close in one of their hunting pants, the ColdGear Infrared Ridge Reaper:

but those lack side zips, and only come in camo.

Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Pant and Dynafit Seraks Skitourenhose Pant are closest to what you are looking for.  Good luck finding them.

You typically will not find soft-shell pants with side vents.

Also check Ar'cteryx, Rab, Mountain Equipment, Millet, etc.

Millet is just as hard to find as those others IME.

A lot more people are growing Millet now. I think it's the gluten-free thing.

Did you see this post? MH bills this fabric as a "soft shell." It's not, quite. But it is a shell, and it is soft, and it does have a very light fleece lining, and it does have (non-separating) side zips.

Yep, feature-wise this nails it.

This looks promising.

Interesting, from an in-addition-to standpoint.      I'll be thinking about that come springtime fer sure.

Followup #1: fit and finish is perfect; they are, however, a bit less 'soft' of a 'softshell' material than what I was looking for (and a trifle hotter warm).

Get yourself some Outdoor Research Trailbreaker pants... the best softshell pants available and has all features in your wishlist, this without saying OR stuff is super high quality!

Flylow Magnum BC pants are pretty close to what you're looking for.  While they don't have full side-zips, they outer thigh vent is large enough for me to put my knee brace on and off without removing my pants.

They might be a little baggy for your tastes though.

My Magnum pants from last season have almost full side zips. Only the waist band and few inches below it can't be zipped.

They are - at present even the Dawn Patrol pant is baggier than I like.

Have you checked Mammut? They do pants numbering like jeans, instead of S/M/L, may be easier to find the fit.
