it is the same as the Nordica dobermann, comes in a soft & a medium firmness shells. Needs a Skilled bootfitter to work (ie tons o grinding). Expect several trips to worthy bootfitter & a case of beer for his troubles.

once again...it is not the doberman. completely different shell mold and plug. different delta etc.
sure the liners are almost exactly the same but that is where the similarties end. those who have been in the boot know that it's actually extremely accomodating. out of all the athletes i've taken out of dobies and put into the race-tec, i've done shell work on 5 total(other than heel spur stuff, planing and such)...they are constantly marveled at how the boot feels like home almost right away. NOT tons of grinding, way less than most plugs. also they come xxs,xs,sft, med, firm and x firm in sizes 22 through28. they rip! you'll see 7 of last years top 10 mens overall w/cup racers in them for 04-05.

I skied in a pair the last few winters, part-time, and they were very sensitive and responsive. Best skiing boot I've tried, and I've pruchased a lot of boots.

Do you know what the relative flexes are?
it's really apples and oranges when your talking about flex index's from all the boot manufac.'s...their scales are simply made up, with the highest(nordica's 150 for example) being the stiffest and so on down the line. the numbers dont mean anything and are only a reference point. internally we use durometer readings when refering to our flexes because they are the benchmarks, from there we know what to do when it's time to tweak formula's. i've taken durometer readings of nearly every other boot out there(since most u.s. subsidiaries either dont publish, or more likely, dont know what their's are)...with that said our race-tec at the soft level is a couple of small clicks stiffer than a production race boot and the xtra a touch softer. typically the xx and x are reserved for junior racing applications but many adults are in the x.
hope this helps

Bottom line, plug boots are meant to transmit pressure to race stock skis. If you don't have race stock skis, plug boots would probably be too much. If you own at least one pair and feel that your consumer boots do not provide enough high-sped stability, get the plugs.

for the record...there will be later this year (finally an honest to goodness version which i recently skied) a consumer version of the atomic boot with a slightly different liner and tweaked(awesome flex properties)plastic...stay tuned.

Any news on this one?

Also, I'm wondering if anyone can compare the flex of the Race Tech to last year's Tecnica XT17. I don't find the Tecnica to be stiff at all, but it was supposedly the stiffest consumer Tecnica last year (I don't doubt that the WC boots are stiffer). Thoughts?

The Race-Tech in the Soft & Medium version are Stiff and Damn stiff! We have a pair of each in the house!

Meanwhile, the Dobermann Pro is already on the market. Marketing faux pas on Atomic's part.

The Race Tec is a good little boot. I like it.

Even the soft Race Tec is a bit stiffer than the XT 17 from last year. Note: This is from memory, haven't had the latter boot on in about a year.

I have the Race-tec in 'H' (Hard), or is it 'Holy Crap!!' I only use it for racing type skiing on firm snow. Needless to say, I didn't need it muck last year... very little hard snow. Otherwise I use a Race-VIP 'M' Medium for all the other times.
