I think I need an intervention here - my tunes suck and I have no idea why.
I started by pulling my skis out of storage and scraping off the spring wax I put on them to protect them.
I avoid touching the bases altogether since I don't want to increase the base bevel.
I take a file, clamp it against the side edge guide, and run it along the edge until the rough feeling goes away. Throughout the process I'm wetting the file to take the tiny amount of gunk that accumulates.
I then move on to a 220 stone, and make passes until it doesn't feel grabby anymore.
Then I move on to a 320 stone. Same thing
Then finally to the 600 stone. Same thing
After all that, over a period of at least a half hour, the skis don't feel particularly sharper than before starting. It also feels like there's a nasty burr coming off the top that I now don't know how to knock off without ruining the crappy tune.
What the heck could I possibly be doing wrong? I'm using a 4 degree guide - this should be good for slalom and GS skis--no idea why I'm getting nowhere
