High Sierra ski bag

This is the second version of their rolling double bag. The first was wrecked by the airline on it's maiden voyage, and replaced by High Sierra.

This one after 2 trips is now wrecked, and will be sent back as well. The airline will repair it, but I want a new one from HS. If you're gonna market a ski bag for air travel, it needs to be capable of standing up to the worst evils the baggage goons can dole out.

My new strategy for air travel with skis will be;

1 or 2 day trip, demo.

3 or more days solo, single sportube.

3 or more days with wife or 2 pr. skis, remove bindings (railflex), pad the sh!t out of the bag, and pray. Or maybe try one of the services that ships your gear.

It sucks that people can't do their jobs well.

I had the same bag from the same company and the same happened to it. After my first trip the wheel case broke off and had to return it. I guess the expression ‘you get what you pay for’ wisely applies here.

Yeah, but it seems like a really good bag.

I don't know what those baggage freaks do to it!

i wrap my skis with bubble wrap and foam to fill up the empty space and in case they destroy the bag. it seems like it's worked so far. i'll probably invest in one of the sport tubes too though.

I've got the sport tubes - the one that holds 2 sets of skis. I've skied about 70 days since I got them last March, with most trips involving air travel. The sport tubes are still like new.

I do have a problem getting the TSA to refasten the tube. I normally use a heavy zip tie to seal the tube and put an extra set for the TSA to use. In all of my flights the TSA has never refastened the tube. While this is not a problem till you want to pull it on the wheels I do find that interesting (how smart are these people?). I now always bring some extra heavy zip ties so I can deal with it and put it in my other bag.

One of the wheel axles got bent once but it bent back ok. So far been a great tool for transporting the skis.

It's not the bag...it's the idiots handling the baggage. No matter what you pack your skis in, you're at their mercy.

It's almost ironic, the more care you take to ensure safe passage of your luggage, the more certain it is to get screwed up. You think these guys don't recognized a ski bag when they see one? They do...they just don't give a rat's @ss whether it's damaged or not.

Yep, Coach 13 is spot-on. My brand new board bag, with 2 pairs of skis in, was completely murdered, between LA and JFK.
They checked it for terrorists, and didn't do up the internal retention straps. So the skis flopped around, and the bag was dragged on its face. The bag is ripped up, the zip scuffed right down. I'm having a stern word to Qantas about it when I get home. I am putting a large notice in it on the trip home, asking them to do up the straps when they go in on their terrorist-hunt this time.

Idiots is right!!!! Flew into Vancouver last year and went to the bulk pick-up area to get my bag. I watched as the moron threw one bag after another several yards down the belt. Right before he got to mine mine I jumped up on the platform, waved my hands in front of his face, and yelled stop!!! He paused took one step to the side and threw my bag down the chute.

It is amazing how many profanities you can yell in an employees face before airport security arrives to kick you out of the terminal.

the baggage handlers hate our ski and board bags, apparently. Well, if they don't like luggage, what the hell are they doing in that job? I had this discussion with the Qantas check in guy in Sydney...they don't like us to pack stuff in our ski bag, but we do it because they smash our skis around so much, the padding helps to protect them.

ant, have you thought about having UPS or Fed Ex ship your skis next time. It would be safer for the skis. I'll assume you only do the long flights twice a year. You may have more piece of mind if you let the professionals ship your skis.

True, but it's very pricey. It would probably be cheaper to have to buy a new ski bag every couple of trips, to be honest.

Max....I retired from UPS and whenever I have anything coming via that carrier...I call ahead and have them hold the package at the center. I pick it up at customer service rather than have it delivered.

I have had 6 pairs of skis shipped to me over the past few years and NONE..I repeat..NONE..have ever been delivered without holes gouged in the box, footprints all over the box, and ends ripped off the cartons.

The reason for this is... the boxes are too long for the box lines and are supposed to be carted to the sort where they are then loaded into the feeders (semis). The unloaders are pushed too hard to meet production goals and just throw them on the belt instead of putting them off to the side for carting. They then proceed to make the journey down the belt...down the chutes and get jammmed in the corners where packages then pile up and crash into them until someone yells "JAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!" The belt is then shut off and the logjam is broken up...the ski box now looking like.....*expletive deleted* The box is then at the mercy of the loader in the feeder. If he puts it at the bottom of the pile....*GULP*.....

Now, it is unloaded and again, thrown onto another belt for reloading at the Hub. This scenario can be repeated 4 or 5 times before is is wedged into the package car for delivery. Heaven help you if your stop is the last one on the route as mine is! The skis get tossed around all day long, as they are constantly in the way of the driver who is trying to get to other packages behind the one that is blocking his way all day long *the long ski box* The journey continues as the driver must stop delivering halfway through the day and start making pickups. The ski box gets jostled about again as new packages are introduced to your skis. Finally, the weary driver gets to your house, in the dark, tired and in a hurry, tosses them into your garage and leaves. Unknowingly, because you never knew the driver was there *never rings the doorbell or knocks because he/she is in too much of a hurry*, you get into your truck and drive over the ski box that has been tossed into your garage.

SOOOOooooooooooooooooo.....FAIR WARNING TO ALL!!!!....Use strong boxes with lots of packing!
If you just throw the skis in a box....good luck!


Check under your vehicles before driving out of your garage. *LOL*

UPS has a problem with oversize packages. They charge you extra for shipping them and I believe you should get the extra service out of the extra fee.

Until they stop playing the odds game with this extraordinary source of revenue I will continue preaching the truth to those who utilize this service.

I took great pride in what I did for UPS. The worst feeling I ever had was approaching a customer with a battered and damaged parcel.

The guys in the suits sit back in their chairs and count revenue and percentages. They rarely see the faces on the customer as I did.
