YEAH BABY!!! Day one is in the books: November 1, 12:35 pm, 2013 and pointed them down! Even though I was only facing 300 vertical feet of bunny hill, as I drove up the switchback to the hill the anticipation began to build. So I picked up my pass and as I was walking to the chairlift, the speakers outside on the lodge were blaring the Who, "My Generation." It made me chuckle and gave me a feeling of being at home like 'I Can't Explain." It is the same song they were playing 39 years ago, when I first skied in Banff and that is one of the things I love about skiing here. The music hasn't changed n 40 years and is ALL from our younger days.
Right now it is just dumping 1-2 cms per hour. I just finished shovelling 3" off my driveway. Tomorrow, I ski pow at the Quay or Nakiska, which opened today. We will see who gets more tomorrow morning.
Here is a feeling I CAN explain. You point your skis down hill and gravity is your friend. You build speed and gently roll the skis onto their edges and they begin to arc and you begin to feel the speed. The wind is in your face as you begin to feel the G-force of the turns as you roll from edge to edge, faster and faster, then open up the arcs and feel the speed increase. The wind gets stronger in your face. When I am skiing, I am totally immersed in the moment. The internal dialogue we all carry on with ourselves stops and I am able to savor the experience without distraction and drink it all in. It is a spiritual experience for me when the internal dialogue stops. I understand this also one of the goals of meditation. The vibe was also great today! EVERYONE I talked to on the lifts was totally stoked to be back riding snow. They didn't just have smiles on their faces, they had the same big sh*t eating grin I had all day and you still could not wipe it off of my face. So for 11/2 hours today, I was SO totally immersed in the moment, immersed in the act of skiing again, I didn't even count the laps and I am normally pretty anal of tracking my vertical. Well perhaps it is my new herbal medicine helping. Anyhow, STOKED to be back on skis! Best regards!
