Breckenridge/A Basin Late January

I'm planning on making a trip to Breckenridge/A Basin this January, skiing Thursday the 23 through Sunday the 26. Generally, how is the snow in Summit county around that time? I'm planning on staying at the Fireside Inn, how have others liked this place? I've not been at >12000' altitude since my weekend hiking trips in college a few years back. I recall some moderate altitude sickness, any recommendations for reducing the impact? My college hiking trips generally included driving 15 hours from sea level and hiking a mountain on little sleep, so that certainly could have more to do with it.

This is how I handle altitude adjustments: Hydrate like a fiend.  Drink at least six liters of water a day starting three days before your trip.  Continue to drink water (anything not alcohol) constantly (Camelback is your friend here) once you're at altitude.  Avoid alcohol for your first two days.

Who knows about the snow? I've seen unbelievably good and poor conditions the end of January, and I'm a relative newbie in Breck with six seasons. My kids come to visit a month later.

Fireside Inn is a brief hike (like three long city blocks) downhill to the gondola. Of course, that means uphill to your room. I've not been inside, but I know the proprietors, and they're great folks. I know the family from working with Niki and her daughter in the summers. She makes some good deserts and describes wonderful breakfasts. They get a lot of returning customers.

As Kneale said, it can be great or terrible, however, late January is usually a pretty good bet.

I also like to pop a couple of Ibuprofen in the gondola parking lot -- felt it helped with the headaches, and maybe the post-50 pains on the hill.  However as I live at about 5600', not really an equivalent issue with coming from the land of the Vikings. Strongly echo the hydration comment though.  Cannot have enough water.  We are both at altitude and a very arid climate also.  I normally empty most of a camelback, as well as stick to non-diuretic liquids at lunch, sadly that includes beer I believe.

For altitude issues, from the website The Travel Doctor:

The symptoms of Mild AMS include:

Nausea & Dizziness
Loss of appetite
Shortness of breath
Disturbed sleep
General feeling of malaise

Symptoms tend to be worse at night and when respiratory drive is decreased. Mild AMS does not interfere with normal activity and symptoms generally subside within two to four days as the body acclimatises. As long as symptoms are mild, and only a nuisance, ascent can continue at a moderate rate. When hiking, it is essential that you communicate any symptoms of illness immediately to others on your trip.

Circle the ones that you've experienced and take the list to your physician to support a request for Diamox. You take these tablets and lots of water for three days before you leave and a couple days after you reach altitude. You continue to drink lots of water throughout your stay. You may get some tingling in your fingertips and toes and you'll have to urinate more frequently, but there should be fewer headaches and somewhat less breathlessness. This is what I did when I used to travel here from Michigan.

Thanks Kneale, I'm definitely considering asking my physician about Diamox! What concerns me is that with only 4 day "weekend" trips, I can't really afford to be "sick" half the time.

If you are in reasonably good health don't worry about the Diamox, you don't need that for the elevation of Summit county AS LONG AS you hydrate very well, avoid alcohol (or at least consume one to two glasses of water for every beer if you must drink alcohol), and seriously bump up yur intake of fresh/uncooked greens a couple of weeks before your trip. A little extra lean red meat for the iron prior to your trip is also advisable. Also I drink a red bull each day right before getting on the lift (more tradition than anything else, but I'd like to believe that the extra boost of B vitamins is helpful).
