vimeo issues

For some reason, I can't embed Vimeo videos. I'm using the mobile version, but I did switch to Desktop to find out the coding I needed, which refuses to display, the word "video" in brackets. However, when I used it, although it displayed a dark rectangle with Vimeo, it told me it couldn't load the video. I tried a bunch of different URL variants, no go. Went to a different browser, no go. But Bob Lee's videos are showing. So, contacted him, asked him what he was doing. He told me that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Copy of one of his posts that didn't load just now: http://epicski.onthesnow.com/t/122182/general-stoke-and-answering-the-question-why-tele/0_10#post_1627816

And one that did.

Are you copying the video URL or the embed code?

Tried it both ways. Tried it with and without the player prefix as well. Got what shows in Bob's first link.

I had the same problem also a few days ago when I went to copy and paste the embed code from my VIMEO video. This site was commenting that it was a unrecognizable code. I eventually hit the share button on the upper right of the VIMEO video and would copy that embed code at the bottom of the pop up. For some reason the embed code in my settings section on VIMEO just isn't recognizable. Who knows!! .

Well, I don't think you need the embed code. I think it's just the URL within the video brackets, which I can't display.

I've noticed the same problem recently, Sib, and it really bugs me because I have a lot of embedded Vimeo clips scattered around on EpicSki, and I embed them often. I had trouble with a few a couple weeks back, and could not find any explanation for it. There were several thread replies that I did not submit because Vimeo wasn't working right. In trying to resolve the problem, I searched for some previous embeds to see what the code looked like--and some of those that had worked perfectly before no longer worked. There was a post in some thread in which my embedded Vimeo clip did not work--just a black box with the "cannot play embedded video" (or something to that effect) message. But interestingly, someone quoted my post in a subsequent message, and the video played in the quote. I went into "edit" mode to look at both posts, and the code was identical.

I cannot explain it, and I hope that Vimeo will fix the problem soon. It does seem that they have made some changes in their recommended embed code--changes that add some commentary, caption-like, to the embedded video, at least when it works. In the past, I did not usually use their embed code--just used the video embed button on our edit screen, or BBCode, and pasted in the url of the video clip. You had to delete the "s" from "https" in their url to make it work. But that's not the problem now, as even previously working embeds sometimes don't work.

If anyone has the answer, I look forward to learning it!

Best regards,

Bob

You need to copy the video URL rather than the embed code.

I looked at the example posts you showed above. In that case the video did actually embed, the problem seems to be on Vimeo's end so there is not much I can do to fix it. The uploader could have some privacy setting on the video that prevents embedding is all I can think of.

Ok on further inspection I think it could be on our end. I tested and the video worked for me fine uploading it to a test post. However when I went to try and fix the reference post I noticed it was made with the BB Code editor instead of the Rich Text Editor. I converted his post to Rich Text. The odd thing is he doesn't have the BB Code editor set for his profile which makes me think there is something funky going on on the back end.

So.... Is there something I can set on my profile? Once it's set, well it work in mobile if I use the video bracketing?

Unless you are using the BB Code editor (it's the one with a lot less buttons and the smileys on the right side) no. I don't think video embedding is available on the mobile site. Or it's not on my iPhone as I just checked.

Well, there's no button, but

works if you just know the bb code, so I would think video would as well.

Also, Bob says it works sometimes and not others, so maybe we need to ask him if he's using desktop sometimes but mobile sometimes and that's the difference.

@Bob Lee

Maybe. I don't remember. th_dunno-1[1].gif. Sometimes I'm on the desktop, sometimes I'm on the iPad. But I always just copy the url.

Let's experiment. Here's one done on the iPad:

Hmmmm.

Edit: Now I've moved over to the desktop and using the same url copied off the Vimeo site:

Hmmm. Maybe it's a Vimeo thing?

Here's the url:

Nifty notification thing you've got going on there Tyler, with the @Bob Lee thing.

It's a new tool we have as of two weeks ago. It is really handy for this type of stuff. Just type @ and start typing the persons name. Then click on it and it will send a notification.

Hmm just worked for me. I checked your post and it was done in the BB Code probably because you did it first on the iPad. I have reported to Huddler that the BB Code editor is not embedding Vimeo videos.

Huddler has been able to reproduce it and has it ticketed for a bug fix. I'll let you know when it will be patched.
