Geneva Dec 12-18

I will attend a conference in Geneva in Dec 2013.  I will be free to ski from the 12th until 18th.  Should I worry the snow conditions?  Where should I go?  Val Thoren?  I have been to Zermatt, Verbier, Courmeyeur, and The Three Valleys.  I want something new.  Close and Cheap would be good.

I've done trips to the alps mid Dec before and had pretty good luck with conditions.  In general, it's very uncrowded until later in the month.  I don't know where in the region you have gone in the past but I'll suggest Portes du Soleil.  It's one of the closest to Geneva and one of the few that is close and accessible by train (via Champery).  I went last year and had a lot of fun.  Pictures below...

Most French resorts close to Geneva (Grand Massif/Flaine, Portes du Soleil/Chatel, Avoriaz, Morzine etc.) won't officially open until December 21st.

If you want a snow sure area, head for Espace Killy (Tignes/Val d'Isère), Paradiski (Les Arcs, La Plagne), Three Valleys (especially Val Thorens, best chances for good snow), or Chamonix.

From Geneva, there are trains to Chamonix and even a TGV to Bourg-St. Maurice, which serves as the major hub for the Tarrentaise areas (Espace Killy, Three Valleys, Paradiski).

I've been to Val d'Isere a couple of times in mid-December and had good conditions both time. I've heard the Paradisiki area is also a good bet for early season snow.

Crowds won't be a problem that week. You should be able to get good lodging deals at least partially satisfying the cheap criteria. I would wait and choose the destination last minute based on snow conditions. Verbier is close to Geneva but you have been there and want something new. Val D'Isere/Tignes is a good option. Val D'Isere cannot generally be described as cheap but can be done on the cheap, especially during the week you will be there.
