I also have to point out that my day was going pretty damned well with nonstop over the head faceshots right up until that point. :)

Yeah yeah, I feel like getting “eaten by the Wolf” is a strange rite of passage there. It’s inevitable. Learned quick its not a place to speed check.

Anyway, I would thoroughly enjoy watching 2CC blast into an oddly untracked section of woods to quickly learn it leads to a flat bench where he sinks to his chest in unconsolidated San Juan fluff.

I just logged in hoping to see some flights booked by TCC... again, my hopes were dashed!

TCC- I hope you haven't checked out of this thread... I'm still rooting for you. You've got my confidence way down though.

Think you can lay down the coin and get this thing booked by tomorrow?

I agree that The Canyons doesn't exactly "suck," though; it's just I like other places in the area much better.

Precisely.  Canyons is a fine area on an absolute scale but in regional context it lags numerous competitors.  One of the departments in which it lags is snow.  That makes it a dubious choice in a below average season like this one.  The entire area is a series of east facing ridges.  The south sides of those ridges are likely very sketchy with this season's weather so far.

I was one of the minority "Yes" votes.   Gpaulski put FirstTracks through 5 of these threads and actually went on 3 of the trips, even though he took no advice on any of them.  So I sorta think TCC will go somewhere, but don't expect the choice to fit much of the logic proposed in this thread.

I booked his pot tour with Harald Harb.

Forget Staying near Vail.

Here's this a few pages back.

Steamboat/Winter Park basically have some of the best snow in the country right now.

Maybe Finndog would be there to show you some Aspen trees. (yeah, it's not those real trees at Stowe...but it's ok)

The 4 by 40 pass.

http://skicolorado.com/Multi-Mountain-Passes.aspx#3

2 days at Winter Park, and 2 Days at Steamboat for $230. $58 a day for two awesome places.

2 very good intermediate mountains. WP has a giant intermediate bowl just for you, even groomed right down main street.

6000 acres of terrain that you won't be able to fully explore in twice the time.

Flights to Denver are cheap. Plenty of cheap rooms in both WP/Fraser and Steamboat.

Stay here- got a quote for $71 a night.  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g33701-d83556-Reviews-Beaver_Village_Lodge-Winter_Park_Grand_County_Colorado.html

Edit: Or you can stay at Snow Mountain Ranch for $64 a night for your own private room and bathroom- hard to beat. 10 minutes from WP. http://ymcarockies.org/#

Here is $109 (probably cheaper if you go through online instead of off their website), right across from the hot springs. http://www.rabbitearsmotel.com/book-now.html

5 minutes of time and I planned an awesome cheap trip for you.

This is somebody telling you I have been there and this is exactly what to do.  Awaiting the excuses in 3.2.1...

Fraser to Vail if wanted: 1hr 40min. By google anyway.

IF- you're not just messing with us... every day you waste not booking your flight, any deal you find on a hotel will be lost in a jacked up flight cost (not to mention the $120 lift tix at Vail)

Just book your cheapest flight, and we'll guide you from there.  The Epicski wack-pack is calling... don't answer that call!

Just under $100 a day if I purchase a 5 out of 8 ticket online beforehand.

Okemo is nearly that much when just walking in.

Hostel near Breckenridge - I know you guys say pick one, but theoretically Vail isn't too far if I wanted to check it out...have heard that I-70 can be a pain in the ass though...

I really hope you are just messing with these people now.  While I think the terrain at Vail would be perfect for you, are you really considering one of the most notoriously expensive places to ski? Gotta be a joke now.

Listen, my wife enjoys blue groomers and nothing harder since her new ACL.  She has enjoyed every trip out West. Steamboat, Snowmass, PCMR, Deer Valley, Big Sky.....just pick a place, you'll have a good time anywhere there is snow.

I'm not messing with anyone. Vail would be on my short list if I found an affordable place to put my head at night. I'm use to $90 lift tickets and $25 lunches when I go skiing.

Okay I'm going to give you a testimonial.

I'm originally from Northern Michigan.  I skied small hills in Michigan for 22 years before taking my first trip to Stowe, then Okemo, then Killington.

I was hooked on "bigger terrain"  Yes Okemo was bigger than anything I'd seen in Michigan.

Later that spring, I booked a last minute flight to Colorado to ski a long weekend at Arapahoe Basin.  It was my first West experience and was at the highest elevation in the region.  I LOVED IT!

I could have lamented on details, but I just went for it.

Just go with it. Whatever strikes you.....do it!

If you go for 4 days instead of a full week, then its something and you'll have a better idea for a big trip next year.

Is there a way to change my poll vote to "no"?

I already voted "no".

I just know. There will be more (back and forth), much more, MUCH, MUCH more to come.

I can give you all the excuses in advance:

- by the time he (sort of) make up his mind, the air fare will be unaffordable and the "deals" that was would be booked up

- then he'll be asking "will it be too warm to ski at xxx in March?"

- the season will be over (in his view), and no amount of data will change his mind

Know such kind of person in the real world. It's a waste of time if you really want to help.

But it's fine entertainment if you been through it a few times and know what to expect.

But I want to have faith. It's not as if the guy really doesn't enjoy skiing. But, sigh, you're probably right.

TCC, why would you not just do this Winter Park/Steamboat trip?   It's got to be the best deal on the best snow anywhere right now, and the mountains are perfect for you.  Please explain why you wouldn't just pull the trigger on this before it's gone.

That might be the right approach. Some people the more you push, the more they dig in their heels.

Trying to save money and skiing Vail is like moving your family somewhere for the simple life and looking for a house in San Francisco.  Excellent troll if you're just messing with everyone.

I'm comparing a $95 lift ticket to an $85 lift ticket. You're late to the party and bound to take most statements out of context...so go back to whereever it is that you came from.
