In the Desktop version. Chrome, Win 7-64. I am sure the number wouldn't change to be correct in other versions, though.
The correct number of messages was 1, not 5.
I had created a thread about this with Huddler a few months ago, but never remembered to get a screenshot and it hasn't happened to me again. I will add it to that thread and maybe it can be addressed. Thanks!
Just to confirm; between 10:30 AM today and 3 PM (Central America Time) five individual messages were sent in that "Would you like to continue as an ambassador" exchange. I looked back at the bug notes I had submitted 2.5 months ago and they thought the issue might be that the popup is telling you the number of messages in a PM exchange whereas the red notification number is telling you the number of new messages. Think of it as unread posts versus unread threads: the popup is telling you the number of unread posts, the red dot is the number of unread threads. Did you check your PMs sometime in that window, or could it be you had five unread messages in the thread?
At the time I wasn't sure because it seemed like the was off at times, but seeing as there were indeed 5 messages in a relatively short time span in a PM I know you received I figured I should check first. Thanks.
Another instance of inability to count.
First this comes up.
Note the number is NINE.
Go to Inbox.
Note it now says ONE message (and that is all there was, not multiple messages in one conversation) and FIVE subscriptions. To me, FIVE plus ONE equals SIX, not NINE.
Go to Subscriptions, having read the Inbox message, get:
Note, it still says FIVE subscriptions, there are FIVE threads showing and there are a total of SEVEN unread posts. Adding the SEVEN (if they are insisting) to the ONE PM, I get EIGHT, not NINE. Adding threads to PM's, I get SIX, not NINE. Pretty bad when a computer can't add....
Here we go, more math info:
Note the pop up says I have SIX private messages. However, note also that I have only ONE private message in the red circle. Now, this is the first time logging in using the PC in a few days, something that is worth noting. Also note that it cannot be including subscriptions, as that number is higher. So, I click on the OK in the pop up box and go into messages. As you can see, only one conversation is bolded. That conversation had only ONE UNREAD message. Just as a point of information, the conversation at that point had 11 READ messages in it. SIX (including the unread message) were from the sender. So, still haven't found where the SEVEN could be coming from.
Read new message (1), and come out, the unread messages are now wiped clean and the unread subscriptions are showing as 8.
The actual count of unread threads is also eight.
Time passes while I work on something else. A new message comes in, now this time only showing as ONE:
And, in fact, there was only one there.
Analysis, being as sometimes it counts correctly and sometimes it doesn't -- it is counting all the messages I got since the last time I used the PC as "new", but were in fact already read on my mobile tablet, but "new" arrivals for the PC. There's a cookie that was set on the PC the last time I was on Epic using the PC, that is still somehow in play when I log on DAYS later, having been keeping up with messages, but on my tablet. This for some reason is not a problem with the threads, as they are always correct, but is a problem for messages. For some reason, the count for the pop up message is wrong, but the count for the red circle is correct.
This was the response I had gotten a few weeks ago:
Okay we figured this out. It's not a bug, it's that the way the unread replies in message threads, vs. unread messages, vs. messages you haven't actually read but you've gotten that pop up notifying you about before, that is totally inconsistent. I'm not even going to try to explain this in detail but I did put it together into a ticket for future consideration. #14518
