3 Days in Tahoe, 3 Days in JH so Mountain Collective?

Thread Starter

So I have 3 Days booked for Tahoe (Dec 30 to Jan 1)  and 3 Days for Jackson Hole (Feb 1-5), I was wondering does it make sense for me to get a Mountain Collective Pass?  I think it might save me a $100 bucks maybe overall (I highly doubt I will use it anywhere else besides those 2) and that's if I use the 50% discount on the 3rd day in Tahoe. So I'm not sure its the right way to go because it means I'm committed to Squaw/Alpine. I've never been to Tahoe so I need some advice on where to go this time of the season.  I think we are going to stay in the Northern Tahoe area and will have a Car to get around, so Squaw and Alpine Meadows  do make sense.  I'd rather avoids the crowds so Alpine Meadows sounds even better based on the reviews. Any mountain in Tahoe is better than the Mid-Atlantic so Im open to anything. Northstar, Homewood and Mt. Rose seem like pretty solid options too. Basically should I wait and see based on conditions?

About us:

I'm an advanced skier but not expert, like trees, bumps, wouldn't mind a little hiking to get ready for JH.  I'll trade the extreme terrain or name brand mountain for no lift lines any day.  Will be with my Gf  (She's not going to JH) who is a solid skier, more of of a groomers person so we typically take different routes down but she can ski blacks, blues.  I'm sure I will ski more than her so I will definitely have some time to go out and explore the mountains to their fullest on my own.

I really appreciate the help everybody.  I tried to cover all my bases but feel free to ask questions.  Thanks

Conditions are sure to be crowded over NY although the afternoon of the 31st and the 1st might not be as bad as the 27-30th.

Mt Rose can be really good and Homewood is fun with a close up view that makes it seem like you are skiing into the lake.

You should probably figure out where you are staying before making the call.

Saving $100 is nice but do the math on the total cost with the MCP discount on lodging vs the total cost of staying at non-MCP accom.

I like AM because a mixed group of diverse abilities can end up on the same lift easier than Squaw.

Here's a pic of Homewood: it's bigger than it looks from the road.

Here's a pic from Mt Rose.

Hope that helps a tad.

Most of the MCP lodging deals require a min number of nights, so may not apply to the OP.  I found that a VRBO 2BR condo was less than a discounted comparable unit at one place.

Where have you skied out west before?

Since the trips are limited to 3 days skiing at each destination, I would not get the MCP.  For JH, a day at Targhee might be worth doing.  In north Tahoe, being flexible during the holidays would be useful. Squaw is great but huge.  Figuring out where to go at Alpine is much easier.  Check the lift ticket prices in north Tahoe.  There is quite a range.

Yes, Dec. 30 - Jan. 1 is not a great time at Tahoe for the well known areas.  Having the flexibility to go somewhere less busy like Mt. Rose or Homewood is a good idea.  Furthermore, as the mountain with the steeps and the lowest base elevation, Squaw's reliability that early in the season is not the best, even compared to other Tahoe areas.

On the other hand Feb. 1-5 is pretty sensible timing for Jackson.
