October turns at the boat

Thread Starter

so i woke up to 9" on my porch this AM and just had to get out there. I put on my new Lange XT's strapped my skis to my back and headed up Emerald Mountain. Its literally out my back door so I figured even if the snow wasn't deep enough, it would be fun just to gear up and take a hike. Its 2 miles with 1K vert to the "quarry" walking up Blackmere Drive, which is a fire road/ nordic ski road. Its maintained well and is packed gravel. In the winter its groomed. I figured this would at least provide some turns with no surprises.

Since the ground really didn't freeze up well (temps fell yesterday from 63* to freezing in about 3 hours) the lower elevation wasn't very deep but up on top (~8K) there was at least 8" of totally untracked medium density heaven.  I got in enough turns to call it a day according Phil using the Bob Peters Standards :D. I skied downa few hundred yards and walked out.  It was a great morning.

Hope you get a lot of that before the 'hill' opens, Finn.

This morning I bought my first tix of the season on SW to DEN for Dec13-16 for $240 r/t..

Just put new shocks on the Klein, so it is time!

OR sent me a heavily discounted Inertia shell, always need one or two new ones every year.

The smell is in the air all the way down here.

Think snow!

Wow...such an early start!  Looks like those skis have served their purpose now and time for new ones.

The only thing missing from the TR is..... what kind of beverage you enjoyed to celebrate?

some really good iced tea,  Tevana sweetened with Agave....  not what you were expecting?

Dang, I'm jealous.

I was thinking some Spanish wine or maybe a micro brew.

Google Agave, it ain't such a good thing.

Great going Finn,  I just hope that reincarnation is possible because I'll never live a life that will allow hiking to ski out my back door - or if I ever do I'll be in my 70's at least, still skiing - but earning my turns I doubt.

Hey I'm not complaining, I have a good life.  I'm really happy for you and so many of the other bears living in the mountains and living the dream.  OK I guess I have to be honest, I'm jealous.

nicely done.

your snow definitely looked better, but I'm pretty sure that my pitch was steeper...  :)

my October turns were had on this conglomeration of ice, breakable crust, and leftover fluff:

Dookey, yeah, it was pretty mellow but the Up was really the reward as was just being out there in the fresh cold air with no one around.  But, yes, the snow was pretty good.

Glad you had fun and stayed safe!

My daughter has a run up in Steamboat Nov 2- Is Steamboat like most of the CO mountains with a firm opening day, currently posted as Wed, November 27, or will they bump it up if they get enough snow?  She has a 5th grade pass and it would be fun to kill two birds with one stone if they are open.

Not a shot in hell we'll open Nov 2, sorry.  It isn't unheard of to open early (we opened 5 days early my first winter in 02) but highly unlikely, definitely not that early, and would take a lot more snow than what we just got.  Plus I'm guessing we'll get another wave of 60 degree weather in the next two weeks that will mostly melt this snow.

Finn not sure if you got out anywhere today, but up high skied greeeeat:

Hard to capture with my crappy camera how amazing the fall colors contrasted with the snow looks right now:

I didn't. My shoulder was pretty fired up from the other day (surgery).  I sent you a PM to see about today (sunday) can't really use my arm to pole yet.

That looks like Storm Peak? Nice coverage. I didn't think it would be so good.

Looks sweet! My brother got out there on Thursday with his buddies with plans to do some hiking. Awoke to the big snow on Friday. They decided to head south to find some drier terrain (near Vail) and woke up to fresh snow there on Saturday. Decided to pack up and head home. He did say Vail was making snow on the north facing slopes. Seems a little early.

It isn't too early on Golden Peak as they are preparing for VSSC and lane training space for teams.

This is what Lionshead looked like yesterday from the top of the Lionshead garage.
