Resort Expansions You Want to See Happen - Page 4

I'd like to see June Mountain add a gondola or at least a high-speed quad from the parking lot to the chalet.  It's bad for kids, bad as a bottleneck, and sloooow.  Downloading while having to hold your skis and your kids skis (since there is no glide-off) is the worst part.

More extreme terrain!Based on aspect, these could be pretty fragile and not accept too many skiers. It may be an opportunity for a new "limited access" model. Perhaps they are zones where you have to pre-register with Ski Patrol to use the day before, they have gates that only open for 1 skier every 10 minutes, directed skiing with small groups only twice a day, etc. etc.

I'm excited about CB too.  Latest map here: http://www.skicb.com/sites/default/files/Proposed%20Winter%20Upgrades%202015%20reduced.pdf  As I read that map, 4th, 5th and 6th would be within the resort boundary and likely open areas assuming it's skiable.  Included in the proposal is a traverse from these bowls to get back to the new lift.  I'm also excited about a lot of the other stuff that is slightly less steep but consistently steep for 1000 vertical feet.  I hope this goes through soon.

Yes, they look good to go! Looks like Teo2 will still need to be hiked from High Lift, that zone has not been open when I've been down there.

Third Bowl seems to be the toughest to open consistently, and these face even more easterly. They'll need some big years to show that terrain off.

Back home in the US:

Liberty / Whitetail

- Better lodging. 100%.

- Do they have automated lift ticket scanning yet? I haven't skied in the US in a while. They totally need that.

Here in Korea:

High1

- More beginner slopes to decrease overcrowding on peak days.

- More slopes More slopes More slopes

- More slopes in general on the Victoria lift side of the mountain.

- Honestly, better food options on the slopes (cmon, no korean BBQ at all on the entire mountain? No hotpot even? every restaurant on the slopes serves the exact same stuff...)

Yongpyeong
- More slopes to be really honest, thats really it. I'd say better transport infrastructure to get to the resort, but they are already solving that issue for the Olympics.

AND IF MONEY IS NOT AN ITEM AT ALL

Ulleung Island (Ulleungdo)

- I really want to see a few slopes put on the small mountain here, with backcountry gates, and a single gondola going to the top. Ulleung Island gets quite a lot of snow during the winter, and already has some people who do some backcountry there.

- If they do this, it'd be amazing to see some ski-in ski-out lodging, especially if they go with something cool and traditional and build traditional Korean lodging (albeit, slightly larger.). As it is a volcanic island, it'd be pretty cool to see a traditional hot springs there too.

- Esp. considering that they will be building a small airport to this island, with some marketing it could be a little hidden gem.

Wouldja look at that! Terrain opens next season, chair opens the following season.

Wow, that's great news.  I've always liked Abasin but this expansion is a real game changer in terms of expert terrain.  I hope the hike out keeps volume low enough that the steep gullies can be open frequently.

A Basin needs to prioritize parking spaces.

The whole "skiing the way it used to be" vibe is pretty laughable when you're parking by Keystone on a weekend.

Beavers are meh, Steep Gullies are superb and should really be something special when open.

Overall, I like the expansion!

Lake Louise has some ambitious, but controversial expansion plans.

1.They would like to bring the West Bowl, which is the big bowl; skiers right of the summit platter, in bounds. They would likely require a beacon, probe, shovel and partner for access. I am in favor of this one, as it has very little impact on the surrounding area.

2. Build a lift up the south side of Richardson Ridge. I am assuming they would like to access the front side of Richardson (speed run area), but I know they want skiers to drop into Hidden bowl, the next Valley over. This is very controversial as it would access the lightly used Hidden Lake area in the Skoki region.

It looks like this in the summer:

You can see these peaks and Richardson Ridge from the regular ski area.

And back towards the skiable terrain.

There is also a plan to develop some more lower mountain intermediate terrain near the juniper area. This seems a bit unnecessary, and the snow down low is never great to begin with.

Add to that, a lodge at the top of the gondola, and warming huts and bathrooms elsewhere.

I would be happy with bringing the West Bowl in bounds, adding a high-speed lift to the old Olympic Chair cut, upgrading ptarmigan and Paradise to high speed and adding bathrooms/a warming hut at the base of Paradise. I'll pee in woods, but others are less comfortable with that choice. Skiing down to Temple really disrupts your Paradise laps and Paradise/Summit circuits.

Monarch Mountain

Monarch is working on the No Name Basin area on the west side of the divide.  Having seen the plans I'm a little disappointed that there will be no runs longer than a mile but I still love the place.

What would be nice is if they could incorporate Water Dog lakes area into the boundary area with a "T" bar pull to Mirkwood then to  Bald Mountain.  You could then ski south along the divide to Mirkwood basin then drop down back to the main area.

That would be about 3.5 mile easy blue run with the hitting bowl near the end.

Or if your adventurous (a  better skier than me )  go west at upper Water Dog lake and hit the extreme head wall of the cirque down into No Name basin. Lots of outcropping's and a few small cliff features for the real extreme guys.

All that being said and not knowing a thing about making a ski area, it allows me to dream up neat things without restraint of the realities and pitfalls, realistic or not.

Here's  an Idea I had for Monarch in addition to the west side expansion with a "T" bar up to Elation Ridge.  I did teach geology/earth science so I kind of have a basic grasp of fall lines and contours.

Just having some fun.

NOT A REAL MAP.... just a concept I did with photo shop!

I'm sure I'm over simplifying it concerning cost  and in dealing with the USFS and EPA etc.
