Photo-heavy Threads on Mobile

Thread Starter

I am a heavy user of the mobile site on a Motorola Droid Bionic running Android 4.1.2. I generally use Chrome as the browser. Basically works great with a few quibbles (can't see a poster's post count, for example, or signature).

The one that bugs me the most has to do with threads that have lots of images in them, such as "Picture of the Day" or "What Are You Drinking Now?". On a "normal" thread, the app accurately remembers where you left off reading that post and auto-scrolls you to that position. However, on a picture-heavy thread, this feature stops working correctly. Instead it auto-scrolls to some mysterious place that is generally way "earlier" in the thread than where I'm supposed to be. That forces me to manually scroll down to my last stopping place. Because threads with lots of pictures take up huge vertical space on a little phone, that means I have to do a TON of scrolling. It's a pain. Ideas?

IPad does it, too. When a page gets really long, pretty much just waiting for it to click over to a new one.

I have the same problems with Chrome on the Nexus. Very irritating. I've tried stabbing at it immediately before the pictures start loading, trying to hold the spot, but it doesn't work. And the pages are so long, up or down, that finding that down arrow to jump to the bottom is just as endless.

Pretty sure I've tried this on other browsers, too, but no change and I always end up ripping them off the tablet and going back to Chrome.

I believe the issue is that the page has not yet fully loaded. It takes much longer on the phone for all the images to load. If you let it completely load out, I believe it will go to the correct spot. Testing right now on my iPhone 4s/iOS 7/Chrome...survey says nope I was wrong. Not a page load issue. I will get a bug report around for Huddler (although they don't work weekends, so probably a few days until I have any answers).

Can we have a 'Hide thread in-line pictures' preference box, please?

We already have a hide avatars and hide signatures and hide carousel preference box; the pictures are already accessible through Gallery View.

But, what would be the point on the picture thread mentioned in the original post?

I'm not sure I understand your question.     Does your question intend to ask 'Why would a reader who chooses to read a thread known in advance to be primarily a picture thread prefer to have the option of [Hide in-thread images] on?'

If that is indeed the question you mean to ask, then my answer would be:    The hypothetical reader could still see the pictures,  through  the option of  loading  single images   through Gallery View instead of loading all of them at once.

Yeah, if you are revisiting a thread where you've seen the old photos on a previous visit, manual picture downloading would be a good option for slow or pay-by-the-byte connections.

What happens with quoted pictures on the same page?  Do they get downloaded repeatedly?  If so, changing that seems like an important mobile optimization.

I guess I've never seen gallery view on mobile, or don't know how to use it. How would you see the comments?

I see there's a way to reduce, in your mobile version, the number of posts showing. That might help with this picture thing. It doesn't seem to impact the number of threads showing.

I've set mine down to ten.
