I am looking for skis. I am planning on volunteering for the ski patrol sometime in the future (I want to be a doctor and this will be relevant, and will be free skiing). The reason I am posting this is that I need some guidance on finding skis.
I would describe myself as a fast skier willing to take some risks. I have gotten decent at skiing double diamonds (although in less forgiving conditions I don't think I would hold up that well). I need to eventually be able to take on all of the mountain however, obviously.
About myself: I am a 5'9" male clocking in a 167 lbs. I have always rented when I go to the mountain, and have used solomon scramblers pretty much exclusively. They are the "basic" ski at the rental shop. I don't know if they are good or great or what by anyone else's standards but they have worked for me. In icy terrain, not so much, but I really don't have anything to compare them to. I think I have used 170-180 cm in the past. I am a 28.5 boot.
Right now I am checking out skis to purchase and, being young, do not want to break the bank on a set of skis. So I have been on craigslist and every now and then someone is selling a package for ~100-200 dollars that is my size boot and ski. Right now I am going to meet some guy who has K2 skis and solomon boots.
When I meet with him I should look for what besides making sure the skis are supple fiberglass and do not have any deep gashes? Should I consider wider skis for the eventual powder day? Do patrollers typically have multiple sets of skis?
I ski eastern sierra snow in case anyone was wondering.
