What's with the flood of spam recently? Much of it appears to have been automated by a deranged programmer with only a limited command of natural language (to say nothing of English).

I haven't seen much in the way of a higher number of spam posts. If you see anything flag it and we'll take care of it.

We block most spam countires like Philippines, Bangladesh, Nigeria Indonesia Viet Nam, Sri Lanka,Pakistan and India but have left China open, and that is where most it comes from.  Some also gets in the back door by cloning U.S. I.P. addresses.  In general, I agree with Tyler, spam is not a widespread problem, but it helps when members report it.

Also, a number of members have what we call super flag capability.  When flagging a post they have the option to hide (delete) the post pending moderator review.  If you would like to be a super flagger, just let me know.  It helps to keep the spam out of sight until we can check it out and ban he spammer.

Why have we not blocked Costa Rica yet? I see a lot of posts with questionable English and inane content coming from that country too. :D

The main problem with Costa Rica is the under-age drinking of low quality booze.  Sin embargo, me parece un buen idea.

I do generally flag spam when I see it. In the latest instance I happened to pull up the "new posts" page last night at a particular moment and saw something from someplace that was obviously a travel outfit. I flagged it. Then right after that there were six or eight new egregious threads all in a row by some"one" named "oursee". At that point I felt like bulk action was required, not onesy-twosy stuff. I just went back to check and you guys have already banned "him." Thanks.

We can nuke a spammer, banning and deleting all content in one step.  It can save time compared to deleting individual posts.  I got the post report from several members on that spammer from China, and used the nuclear option.

I haven't seen that much. When I do I super flag it, but I must be asleep during prime spamming time and it's fixed by breakfast.

Sí, compro por mi. Nada más, soy un pinche. ;) (The definition of that last word will depend what country you picked you Spanish up in. I've come to realize Costa Ricans have a lot of common phrases that are quite vulgar to Mexicans and Puerto Ricans)

Does incessant thread creation on done-to-death topics -- helmets, fat skis on hard snow, East vs. West -- qualify as spam?

Is it true what is being said about Costa Rica?

Is it really filled with quint little drinking villages that have some very severe fishing problems?

What would we have to talk about if we couldn't discuss those topics?
