Monday Sep. 16th Release Notes

Thread Starter

I realize not many of you will have a big use for the first feature on the list, but a few like those that write many gear review threads, article contributors, bloggers, etc. may want to review that part of the release notes. The other features down the list like being able to start YouTube videos at a certain time may come in handy for the community as a whole though:

Embed a product or thread snippet in posts and articles

Ticket #13743

Hyperlinks are awesome.  I'm not knocking them.  But have you ever wished that when you're linking a product or a thread you could show some sweet metadata that you didn't have to manually paste in?  Like affiliate links?  Or thread reply count?

This release is delivering a new tool to help you do just that.  This is the first iteration of this tool and right now, it includes the ability to embed a product or a thread into any piece of content where the advanced editor lives (posts, articles, reviews, etc).  For products and threads, each comes with two layouts you can select - block or inline.

It's not only great for making your life easier on the HTML coding front, it's a great SEO booster as well.  Because each embedded module is linked to its source object (thread or product), as that object changes, any existing embedded module changes with it.  So that means if a product has been embedded 100 times on a site, if you update that product's name to be more accurate or more SEO friendly, the URL and the product name get updated in every single one of those places all at one go.

For products specifically, the inclusion of affiliate data is a big one because the affiliate data will stay as fresh as the data you see on the product pages themselves.  That means users will see up-to-date information, right then and there, and if they're feeling ready to make a purchase, they have no further to go to find out where they can make it so.  It's definitely a bummer of an experience to be in the market for something, click through to buy it, and see a different price or see that it's not even available anymore.  This module solves that for users.

So before we dig into how it will work, here's how it can look in your content.

You can layout product blocks in a buying guide...

You could float them so text flows around them....

You could fancify something that might just look like a link....

So when you hover over it...you get all kinds of special....

To get into the nitty gritty, here's what the modules will look like:

Products

Block layout at maximum width:

Block layout with its width constrained:

Inline layout with hover:

Threads

Block layout at full width:

Inline layout with hover:

And here's what each of these will look like on mobile:

How it will work

  1. Start your post, article, review, etc. (any where you can use the advanced editor).
  2. Expand the editor to use the advanced mode.
  3. Click the embed button (coming in this release).

  4. A dialog will appear where you can search for a product's name, paste in a product URL, search for thread keywords, or paste in a thread URL.

  5. After you search, you can filter your results down to threads or items.

    Here are results for items:

  6. After you locate the product or thread you'd like to embed, click on the result.
  7. You'll be taken to the layout selector portion of the dialog.  Here you'll be able to see how the block layout and the inline layout look.

  8. When you know which layout you'd like, click to select.

  9. The thread or product will be embedded into your content

Things to know about product embeds:

  • Product names will update if you change them on the product page ("Rename" admin tool)
  • Review counts, thread counts, etc will update as new content is created / deleted
  • Affiliate data will be automatically updated, added, or removed as it changes from the vendor / on the product page.
  • A remnant of the module will appear if the product is deleted or held for moderation.  The placeholder message will say "Sorry, this product is no longer available" for the block layout and "(Unavailable Product)" for the inline layout.

Things to know about thread embeds:

  • Thread names will update if you change them on the thread page ("Edit Thread" admin tool)
  • Post counts, view counts, etc will update as new posts are created / deleted
  • A remnant of the module will appear if the thread is deleted or held for moderation.  The placeholder message will say "Sorry, this thread is no longer available" for the block layout and "(Unavailable Thread)" for the inline layout.

Phew.  Okay, so now you've seen what it can look like and how it will work.  Once the feature is up, we'll be sending around some links where you can see it in action and hopefully you all we be posting where you've put the embeds to use as well.

Single-user reviews page

Ticket #13726

Several releases back, we redesigned our search pages, which included adding a way to see all of a user's reviews through search, like this page here on the Partner Huddle.  It's functional but it's a search results page.  It doesn't necessarily give the proper dues to the review as it should.

In this release, we're adding a dedicated single-user reviews page to the mix.

It will be automatically linked on the user's profile page, with a count of how many reviews they've written, similar to classified feedback or in some cases, site rep.

This link will go to the dedicated page for that user:

rkzu4qz.png

By default, this page will sort in reverse chronological order (newest first) but you can also sort chronologically (oldest first), by average rating, or by "Most Helpful".

For those of you who have already added user review counts to your postbit with a link to the search results page, we're updating this to the new single-user reviews page.  And if you're super jealous that other sites will have this newfangled page linked in their postbits, you can get in on that action too - just talk to your MSP.

Start your YouTube videos at particular times

Ticket #13519

We all love our YouTube videos.  In this release, we're adding support for specific start times. Now a URL likehttp://youtu.be/jofNR_WkoCE?t=20s will be supported, whether embedded in BB Code or the rich text editor, so if you want to start with "cow goes moo" and skip the dog and the cat, you can.

I like the You Tube thing, not sure about the other stuff. Could we embed the home page of a site in a signature or something?

Currently it is restricted to embedding threads or products into posts on the forum (although in theory I suppose you may be able to embed in the signature, but there are other tools that do that better ie see how my signature is setup).
