Still Skiing - Jackson Hole in September, 2013

I went skiing this past weekend.  The hike was miserable and the snow was even worse but I *did* ski, so that finishes up 16 years of skiing at least once a month.

We were originally intending to drive up to Beartooth Pass to ski "my" summer snowfield, but we decided to hike out and back from the top of the JH tram instead.  We hiked from the tram past Cody Peak, past No Name Peak, and over to the saddle to the south of No Name.  There's a permanent snowfield there known as The Wave.

It's also known as the Sunglasses Snowfield, because in low-snow years the middle of the snowfield melts out, forming two separate "sunglass lenses" (that's if you kind of squint as your'e looking at the snowfield and you have a fairly active imagination).  Here's the snowfield from the valley floor:

Here I am at the top of the snowfield:

Part way down:

Nearing the end:

Don't you wish you'd been there?

Who'd you talk into going? Those pictures didn't take themselves.

Is it true that a crappy day skiing beats a day watching football and drinking beer?

Ruthie hiked over there with me.

Usually when she goes along, she'll buckle my boots down and go for a run if the skiing's any good.  That "snow" was basically an eight of an inch of slightly-softened mush on top of sun-cupped, ice runnels.  I told her the skiing sucked and she was fine with skipping the skiing and just hiking back with me.

Heh.  Sort of the anti-carver.  Those are old Head OB-95's.  Super light and pretty fun in the right conditions, but not exactly a hard-snow ski.

I think I ended up doing all three.  Does that make it a three-sport day?

How many turns per run?  Or another way of looking at it, how many steps up versus the number of turns down - the turn per step ratio:)   Looks like a fun day!

Hats down to you,Bob...
That is just how is done, no matter what if you want to ski, you ski, no excuses.

On the other hand: skiing, watching football and drinking beer, looks like you are on your way to become Triathlete smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif.

How much snow is there on the lower saddle of the grand and the middle teton glacier this time of year?
