They seem awfully similar. What's up?

Obviously Volkl thinks 1mm wider in the waist and tail is important.:confused

RTM 81 I believe is a reverse camber ski. the 80 is traditional camber with a rocker tip.*1 is brand new for Volkl.

According to Volkl's webiste both skis are full rocker.  They may ski quite differently, but there isn't anything on Volkl's site that indicates any difference other than graphics and 1mm in the waist and tail.  Makes no sense to me.

It is my understanding that the RTM 81 has construction more similar to the RTM84 in a narrower platform which will make it a bit beefier than the RTM 80 which is a little too soft for my liking. I think the RTM 81 will be one of the go to skis for eastern all mountain skiing. I am looking forward to trying it out.

Looking at them a couple of months back the 81 claims to be "powered by steel".  I haven't followed that up yet (although I've been been meaning to) but the construction has certainly changed somewhat in the newer ski.  The 84 is certainly more ski than the 80, and I haven't been on the 81 yet.

[edit - the 81 has a single layer of steel included in the layup - haven't been able to find the grade/type of steel or the thickness of the sheet]

I am not a huge fan of the rocker technology in the new Volkl RTM series of skis. They just dont feel like my 'old' Volkl Tigersharks or 6*s. No pop coming out of the turns.
