G3 vs G4 vs XXX

I am a 5'9" 150lb female who skis at about level 8. I took a three day Dave Murray Downhill Course last year that elevated my sking to the point that I need to wear a helmet (ie; I'm way faster now). I skid 36 days last year, I'm already on day 9.

Last year I skiid on the '02 - Volkl G3's (178) and I loved them.
At the end of last year we got a deal on a rarely used pair of 02 Bandit XXX's (177). How could I say no!
THEN my wonderful husband found a pair of '03 -Volkl G4's (178) for SALE and since he can read my mind he bought them for me!

The first day of the season I skiid the G3's. How could a ski be better... the next day I skiid on the G4's... How could I go back to the G3's? Guess they'll be my cruiser skis now... Last weekend I took out the XXX's. All the days were in 10 or so inches of powder and hard packed cruisers back to the lift.

Here are my impressions.

The G3's are great! Very turny and carve well, good in the crud but do tend to chatter at speed.

The G4's were EPIPHANY Super stable, I could turn in anything and very responsive for me. Great carving, I couldn't lay the edge down far enough! They just wanted more!

The XXX's were very lazy skis, they just wanted to go straight. I found that they SUCKED the energy out of me while the G4's gave it back. The XXX's were happy straight lining anything, making them turn was an effort. Only in really soft deep powder did they really work for me. The G4's worked for me there as well.

The XXX's are a VERY popular ski here at Whistler. I know two guys who just RIP on them. I was a lot slower on these skis and I found them to be boring.

My Husband also happens to have a pair of Pocket Rockets. We traded skis for one run on chewed up soft powder and I found these skis to be a lot more responsive then the XXX's. I had a lot more fun on these! But he wouldn't give them to me!

SO.

I will be selling the XXX's and using the G4's for most of the days. Despite the fact that the XXX's weigh less then the G4's I was more tired after a day of skiing on them then the G4's.

Eventually I think I will get a pair of Explosivs. I might want to try them Head to Head with the PR's, but I think I'm a volkl girl.

Well, Sharon, I think you have picked one heck of a ski for your favorite!! Over TG weekend at Whistler, I ran into Hilary Lindh (10 yrs on the US Ski Team...and a few World Cup medals in her pocket) and skiied with her most of the day. Her fav is the G4 in a 188. I had skiied the 178 the previous day and liked it a lot. That night I found a pr of 188's for $599 Cdn and bought them. I'm 160 and 5'9" but need a shorter, lighter, and softer ski for touring and tight trees, so I'm after a pr of 177 Atomic R:EX's.

I had bought some K2 Axis XP's from my friend who is a K2 Women's Demo Team member. I should have known 174 is too short for me, but I sold them this morning on eBay for $100 less than I paid. Plus I keep the bindings and will put them on the G4's, and Fritschi Freerides on the Atomics, when I get them.

I ripped Alpental's 3 feet of fresh Sunday on my old 193 K2 Kreitlers (X-15, predecessor to the Mod X and Axis X Pro.) They work just fine, but I can't wait to ski the new units!

For a pure powder ski, the Explosivs sound like the hot ticket. Personally, I like the feel of skiing in the snow rather than on top of it, but will get a big ski eventually.

Sounds to me like you're being modest in rating your "level"

I have the opportunity to demo alot of skis right now but I still haven't found anything that I like better than my 188 g4's
Nothing is quite as stable with that kind of edge hold. I cant ever imagine selling these skis....

We skied Sun Peaks in the BC Interior last weekend. The systems that have been hammering the coast seem to be missing the interior since the conditions were perfect for cruising. The off piste that was open was bony so we were bound to the groomers.

So what to do...

Demo Volkl Supersport 6 stars!!!

I demo'd a pair of 175's.

I found these skis to be VERY quick edge to edge, I could not lose the edge no matter how hard i dug in.

On the straights, they wandered a bit.

I'm wondering if this has more to do with my boot not tight enough since I notice this on most skis especially with my left foot???

They wanted to go WAY faster then I wanted to go!

We did one run off -piste on about 6 inches of dry but sun baked powder, no crust but not light and fluffy.

I found it hard to initiate the turn but once I got going they were fine. I was wanted the G4's here though!

Back on the G4's at the end of the day I wasn't as confident driving its edge. Definately a slower ski!

My husband and I switched skis for a couple of runs. He has Atomic SX-11. I found the Volkl's quicker and lighter on my feet but very comparable.

If I don't want the speed these skis offer, would the 5 stars be just as good?
