Mitt Questions

Hiya Everyone ;)

I am interested in buying some mitts to ski as they keep my hands a lot warmer than gloves smile.gif

One pair that caught my attention was the Radical Smitten Mitten Snowboarding Mitt. Lots of skiers were wearing these mitts.. But I can't find any reviews.. Does anyone have any comments about them?

Thanks!

Hi Matilda, Welcome to EpicSki.

Sorry to say, I haven't had personal experience with the Smitten Mitten, but looking at the technical information about it, I'm not so sure that its one of the better mittens out there if you're looking for waterproof and warmth.

I tend to get Hestra mittens because they have a lifetime warranty and hold up for warmth and wear in a similar price point you can look at this one.

Welcome!  I'll second TC's recommendation of the Hestra Heli 3 Finger mittens.  I use them on very cold days and they are great.  I really like the index finger being on its own and allowing for much more dexterity than a regular mitten.

I can't post the link from work, but as a less expensive alternative I have the basic Dakine mittens. They are fully waterproof and come with a set of lightweight liners, making them very warm and versatile. I often find myself just wearing the liners when the day warms up. They have the "windshield wiper" on one thumb and the "snot rag" on the other. Not sure who wants to freeze their boogers on their glove,s but.....

I got them delivered of less than $25 and they have kept my hands warm well below freezing. The only item missing might be the zippered pocket for small items or hand warmer packs. As a Backpackergaper, the best feature is taking off the mittens on the lift and being able to keep the liners on. I've had them for two seasons and may need to replace the liners this year, but the mitts are still going strong.

Call me cheap.

Depends on what you "need" as well as want.  The mitts you posted are way more fashionable than the ones that are the warmest.  For the money the Black Diamond Mercury Mitt is the way to go.  For warmth, you are going to be hard pressed to beat the Hestra Army Leather Expedition Mitt.

I own and have used, the above plus the Hestra Army Leather Extreme Mitt and Reush Race Mitts..

The Mercury Mitts were a let down, but are reasonabled priced.  Pretty good but the Hestras beat them "on MY hands".  The Expedition Mitts have climbed Everest.   Holy Crap are they warm.

I would qualify all of this as I DO NOT LIKE BEING COLD.  I Like sports that happen during cold months, but I don't want to be cold.

Leather rules as the shell.  Liners are better than not.  A gloved liner in a mitten Liner with a mitten shell is wicked warm.

Have fun,

Ken
